Egan School Presentation: Be Here You Belong
Egan Junior High School Principal Coni Cullimore presented information about new electives and educational opportunities for students.
Strength and Conditioning class introduces students to weight training and allows them to create their own personalized exercise routine. The updated Robotics and Drones elective brings Project Based Learning and Challenge Based Learning to new heights by teaching students to program drones, understand radio control devices and physics. Green Thumb Ecology allows students to explore environmental awareness projects, as well as take on Campus Green Team responsibilities, garden cultivation and ecology curriculum. Last, but not least, Egan will offer AVID as a new elective starting next year to help prepare our represented students, especially our socioeconomically disadvantaged and Latinx students, for high school, college and career readiness.
Teacher in Charge, Dena Zacanti went on to detail all of the events that occur at Egan to welcome and prepare 6th grade students and families for junior high. Parent nights, visits to PTA meetings, 6th grade orientation and the Elective Fair provide wonderful opportunities to help students and families gain a deeper understanding of the school, get to know the campus and choose electives for the upcoming school year. In addition, Viking Camp occurs for the first 3 days of school to welcome 7th graders and help them get acclimated to their new school community.

New Science Curriculum for 6th-8th Grades
The Board unanimously adopted a new science curriculum for our upper grade levels to best align with NGSS standards for science education. LASD 6th through 8th grade students and teachers engaged in a successful pilot of the new Elevate science curriculum, which received excellent reviews.
The Elevate curriculum will provide more opportunities for hands-on science through which students will do science, engage in discourse, gather evidence, document their reasoning, and propose solutions. This method of scientific inquiry, reasoning and analysis will prepare our students for high school, college and their careers.

Recognizing LASD's Diversity
In honor of the diversity that makes our schools and communities stronger, the LASD Board of Trustees discussed creating a calendar of Heritage Months. Our teachers have been engaged in ongoing professional development to ensure inclusive classrooms, lesson plans and classroom materials, such as books, videos and primary source materials that engage and encourage students to explore our diversity through history and culture in the classroom. The Board's consideration of Heritage Months is in alignment with the educational experience of our students in the classroom and honors the diversity of our community.
The Board plans more discussion on this topic to ensure the diversity of our families, students and teachers is recognized. For more information, please check out items I.5, I.6 and I.7 on our agenda online.
Special Board Meeting
The Board also held a special meeting to study key components of the 10th school site, including financing for a future 10th school site and a program to modernize existing school sites. At this time the Board is considering all options and will continue to discuss the new school site. With 10 schools on 9 school sites, the 10th school site will ensure long term sustainability for our local public schools and flexibility to continue to provide excellent educational opportunities for all students.
