Winter Break (teachers & students do not attend)
Principal's Corner
Ms. Flaugher
Greetings! I hope each of you had a restful and peaceful few days off last week. While the traditional Thanksgiving may have looked different for many, the opportunity to step back and recharge is always welcomed.
With the winter break quickly approaching, I want to remind our families and students that we only have 15 instructional days left. I hope to see our students working hard through those days, taking advantage of every opportunity to interact with our teachers. Finish out 2020 strong and be ready to start the new year off on a good note. Remember, the 1st semester is not over until January 15, 2021. Come back ready to work hard on those last few assignments.
As we move toward the close of the year, I want to take a moment to thank so many of you. To our faculty and staff, who took on the job of reinventing what instruction and support look like but still focused on what’s important-the relationships you build with your students. To our families, who have had to support the children in your life in ways you never imagined. Finally, to our students who have had a year thrust upon them that they could not have imagined but are doing the best they can to succeed under extraordinary circumstances. I feel lucky each and every day for the opportunity to serve each of you and wish you the very best this holiday season.

AP Test Fees
AP Tests Fees: To anyone who has not yet paid these fees, look for an email from Mrs. Wise (wiselw@lcsedu.net) reminding you of how many tests your student has and how much is owed. Each test is $40.00. However, if you believe you qualify for a reduced fee waiver, please fill out Fee Waiver Form ASAP and submit it to Mrs. Tracy Goode (millergoodetf@lcsedu.net). If your application is approved, the cost per exam is only $15.00.
Parents of seniors taking AP Government: Please note, this class contains 2 courses: US Gov’t in the fall and Comparative Gov’t in the spring. Therefore there are 2 tests for this class and thus, 2 test fees.

Attendance
Regular Attendance
Regular attendance helps our students excel in learning.
Lynchburg City Schools is checking student attendance on a daily basis. We need all of our students, whether they are remote learners or in-person (hybrid) learners, to be involved with school every day.
Parents, guardians, and families, you are essential partners in promoting good school attendance even in this most challenging time. When a student misses one day or one lesson, that means they may have missed something critical to their understanding of the next several days of instruction.
High schools will be checking attendance each day using a daily attendance question. Beginning Monday, November 2, hybrid AND remote-only students will be required to log into their Homeroom Google Classroom each day by 3:00 p.m. and respond to the Daily Attendance Question.
If students do not complete the daily attendance check-in as outlined above, beginning the week of November 2, 2020, families will receive an automated phone call letting them know that their student was marked absent on the previous day. If the student or family believes the recorded absence is in error, please reach out to the school. ! #AttendanceMatters #Hilltoppers #Dare2Lead #TogetherWeKeepClimbing

Remote Learning Tips
Are you and your student struggling with how to structure the remote learning school day? Having trouble navigating Google Classroom? Need some ways to manage your stress?
Luckily, a team of Hilltopper teachers put together a resource to help give students ideas on ways to be successful: setting up a schedule, navigating Google Classroom, stress management, brain breaks, what a virtual learning day could look like, and more! These were created in the hope that one or more of these resources will help you become even more successful this school year (and beyond)! Here is a short, one page resource for students as well as a more detailed set of slides for families.

Medical Conditions
If your child has a chronic health condition such as asthma, diabetes, a seizure disorder, or a
food allergy requiring an epi-pen the school division requires that the school clinic have a Health
Care Action plan that is signed by a physician and parent. The Action plan can also include
permission for medication.
See attached links for Health care plans that can also be found on the LCS website.
Virginia Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP)
If your child does not have one of the above chronic illnesses but requires medication while at
school the clinic must have a Physician/Parent Authorization to Administer Medication form.
This form must be completed and signed by both the parent/guardian AND the physician. While
we highly encourage parents to make every attempt to give their student’s medications at home,
we understand that there are circumstances that will require your student to take their meds at
school. Please consider the following guidelines for medication administration by the
nurse/clinic while your student is in school:
●A parent always has the right to come to the school and administer medication to their student at
any time during school hours. .
●A Physician/Parent Authorization to Administer Medication form must be completed, signed
and dated by both the prescribing physician and the parent. A parent/guardian should turn
in this form with the medication to be given at school.
●No medication (including over the counter medications like Tylenol and Advil) will be given
without a signed authorization form that is complete.
●All medications must be brought to the school by the parent/guardian. Medication must be
signed in by both the parent and the nurse/school designee. Please allow 15 minutes in order to
accomplish this when you come to the school. Medications may not be brought to school by the
student. Prescription medications must be in the original pharmacy bottle containing the
student’s name, medication name, dosage, route, and frequency.
●Over the counter medication must be in a sealed, original container. The nurse can not
accept any opened containers.
●Students are to report to the clinic at the time their medication is to be administered.
●The parent/guardian must bring in more medication when it is needed.
●It is the parent’s responsibility to pick up medication at the end of the year. No
medication will be kept over the summer or until the next school term.
