ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS BATTLES FOR THE BEADS
On Thursday, mostly at the end of the school day, learning communities conducted a series of rock, paper, scissors battles to win the most bead necklaces possible. Everyone started with a necklace and with successive contests in classrooms around the school, necklaces moved on to a final winner in each community. That winner will go on to a battle between learning communities on Friday to determine an overall school winner.
The contests on Thursday, were loud and enthusiastic. Here are photos from two learning communities.
TEEN BANNED BOOK CLUB & VIRTUAL MEETING
Avid young readers at St. Albans City School received parental approval to join a one-time book club and read or listen to Jason Reynolds' book, "All American Boys". They gathered in the early afternoon on Wednesday, February 21st to eat snacks and get to know each other. They started by discussing the book and how and why a variety of books are being banned from schools around the country. When this social and book review component of the meeting was completed at 3:00pm, the group joined a stimulating virtual meeting with Jason Reynolds and hundreds of other book club groups around the country to discuss access to books in schools. The banned book club event wrapped up at 4:00 pm.
INCREDIBLES 4TH GRADE MATH & STEAM PROJECT
This was a three phase project orchestrated by Ms. Springfield and Ms. Teenyanoff. Students started with lessons about angles taught by their math teacher, Ms. Springfield. They next researched golf courses, because golf is a game requiring the use of angles, before finishing the project by building models of golf course with robot components while guided by STEAM teacher, Ms. Teenyanoff.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History Month is a celebration of Black American history and achievement that takes place each February in the United States. It is also called African American History Month. During Black History Month, many people learn about the accomplishments of individual Black Americans as well as the contributions of Black people to American history. This February, we are excited to celebrate Black voices with books that center around Black lives, Black joy, and Black stories that are sure to resonate far beyond a single month of the year. Join us as we #ShareBlackStories and checkout books from our City School library collection.
TIMELINES FROM BLACK HISTORY
Erased. Ignored. Hidden. Lost. Underappreciated. No longer. Delve into the unique, inspiring, and world-changing history of Black people.
Black leaders, writers, civil rights activists, scientists, and more have influenced, inspired, and changed the societies we live in. This history book’s pages are filled with the stories of these historical giants and their contributions to the world.
NYA'S LONG WALK
Young Nya takes little sister Akeer along on the two-hour walk to fetch water for the family. But Akeer becomes too ill to walk, and Nya faces the impossible: her sister and the full water vessel together are too heavy to carry. As she struggles, she discovers that if she manages to take one step, then another, she can reach home and Mama’s care.
Bold, impressionistic paintings by Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Honor winner Brian Pinkney evoke the dry, barren landscape and the tenderness between the two sisters.
ALL BECAUSE YOU MATTER
This powerful, rhythmic lullaby reassures readers that their matter and their worth is never diminished, no matter the circumstance: through the joy and wonder of their first steps and first laughs, through the hardship of adolescent struggles, and the pain and heartbreak of current events, they always have, and always will, matter.
HIDDEN FIGURES
Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were good at math…really good. They participated in some of NASA's greatest successes, like providing the calculations for America's first journeys into space. And they did so during a time when being black and a woman limited what they could do. But they worked hard. They persisted. And they used their genius minds to change the world.
In this beautifully illustrated picture book edition, we explore the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as "colored computers," and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career.
