OLHMS Weekly
~Week of 8/30/21~
School Late Start Tomorrow (Wednesday, September 1st)
Mustang Families and Scholars,
Thank you to our entire school community for their support, patience and school pride! We are off to a great start this year!
School Late Start: Wednesday, September 1st school begins at 9:30am. Essentially, all families add an hour on to the start of the day. We will still finish school as normal.
Here are a couple reminders/ updates!
Buses: Please know we are working with a third party company, First Student to ensure buses are running smoothly and on time. We realize this has caused much frustration for all of us. We were told to continue expecting delays, we will do our best to get communications out as soon as we know if buses are running late.
Our estimated departure time from the middle school is 3:30 PM. In the event that we have buses running late, parents should expect automated calls between 3:35 PM and 3:45 PM. Automated calls are made using the skyward system and all parents of bus riders should expect a call from August 25th until Labor Day to inform you of departure or delay.
Please ensure contact information, including the primary contact (first call) is accurate in skyward. If the bus company, First Student communicates specific bus estimated time of arrivals, calls would be individualized by buses that are running behind schedule.
Lunch: Here is the link for the September Lunch Menu . Please remember there is a free option, but any items not included with the free lunch will become a charge to your account.
Medical Forms: If you have not already done so, please submit your medical forms to our Nurse’s office.

August 31th: PTSA Meeting (TONIGHT)
7:00pm-8:00pm
1st PTSA Meeting Tonight at 7:00 in the OLHMS Staff Lounge
PTSA Welcome Letter and More!
Welcome back OLHMS Mustangs!
My name is Teresa Shane, and I am your OLHMS PTSA President for the 2021-2022 school
year. This is my third year as president, and I have a 7th grader at OLHMS this year. As a
new-to-middle-school mom three years ago, I realized that the PTSA is a little different than the PTA at the elementary schools. For starters, PTSA stands for Parent Teacher Student Association. We encourage and look forward to having parents and their students, along with
teachers, join the association and learn what we are all about. We welcome students' opinions and ideas on what we can do for the school. Student members are welcome to all PTSA meetings.
Through our memberhub newsletters to all members, and through our monthly meetings, parents will have the opportunity to learn what is going on around school. They will also be able to meet other parents, and help in supporting the needs of our school. A few of the things that were done last year thru the PTSA include; co-purchasing water bottles for all students, hosting the Halloween drive thru spooktacular, hosting teacher appreciation events, treated students to a virtual magic show, held a beautiful in person 8th grade social, and treated all of the students to an end of the year pizza party. These events are not possible without volunteers, and PTSA member support.
At our first meeting on Tuesday, August 31 at 7 pm, you will have an opportunity to meet the Assistant Principal, Dr. Hantson and our D123 Superintendent, Dr. Enderle along with the new PTSA board, and have a discussion on what the PTSA can do to help our kids this year. Membership is $7 per "parent" (which is any parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc) or staff member and just $5 student member. When your student is a PTSA member it gets them into our open gyms for free. Our first open gym is scheduled for September 16. Be one of the first to sign up in person at tonight’s open house or online, and you will have a chance to win a gift
card!

I hope you will follow us on Facebook OLHMS PTSA, for updates as well! Thank you for your support, and I am looking forward to a great school year supporting our kids.

IMSA: Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
At IMSA we have a few opportunities we were hoping you would be able to share with any interested families.
PROMISE Program: Fall 21 and Spring 22 Application
Our Promise Program application is now open for 7, 8, and 9th graders! IMSA’s PROMISE Program addresses the unique challenges of culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse (CLED) students who have interest in STEM education by providing academic enrichment programming at low to no cost. Black or African American, Latinx and rural Illinois students as well as students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch are encouraged to apply. Attending these sessions provides students with the opportunity to work with IMSA faculty, staff, and student mentors while exploring IMSA’s unique learning laboratory. The PROMISE program consists of three grade-based experiences. The Fall and/or Spring PROMISE Programs are held on Saturdays during the fall and/or spring semesters. PROMISE programs are typically held on the campus of the Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois. Currently, all programs are being held virtually until further notice.
VIP Event: August 28th, 10:00 am-12:00 pm
The VIP event series will kick off with a virtual conversation with IMSA’s new President, Dr. Evan M. Glazer. The event will focus on why our students choose IMSA, information on the application process, and a sneak peek of life on campus from our Student Ambassadors! A zoom link will be provided to all registered guests 24 hours before the event.
