ESD 112 Prevention Professionals Recognized at 2022 Prevention Summit
After spending a decade in a behavioral health system that cared for patients with a drug addiction but failed to acknowledge the impact of nicotine product use, Deb Drandoff embarked on a 20-year professional learning journey with ESD 112 and made commercial tobacco product prevention in behavioral health her personal passion. Whether testifying at legislative sessions, developing data-based best practices, bringing high quality training opportunities, or simply making time to drop off a no smoking sign, Deb is a champion and instrumental force in expanding awareness of this issue and normalizing the idea of smoke-free behavioral health centers in Washington State and beyond.
Deb is retiring at the end of 2022 - it goes without saying that she will be greatly missed. We wish her the very best in her next adventure!
Lindsey Lonner, Community Prevention Project Coordinator for Castle Rock CARE Coalition, received a Prevention Professional Award at the Washington Prevention Summit held last month. To be considered for this award, nominees must be strong prevention leaders or supporters in their community. Lindsey was recognized for her coalition leadership, community involvement, active support of prevention activities, and commitment to substance use disorder prevention. Congratulations Lindsey!
Washington State Food Security Survey
The University of Washington and Washington State University, with support from Tacoma Community College, have created the Washington State Food Security Survey (WAFOOD) to monitor how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted economic security and food access for Washington State residents. This information will help state and community partners to identify needs and support resource allocation for WA State residents.
Washington State residents who are 18 years or older may participate. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and is computer and smartphone capable. This survey will ask about health, food access, and economic needs but will not ask for name, protected health information, or any identifying information. Upon completing the survey, there is an option to provide an email address to enter a drawing for a $50 grocery store gift card (one of fifty). Entering the drawing is optional, taking part in this study is voluntary.
Please forward this survey to your networks!
The survey can be accessed here: https://redcap.link/WAFOOD
Interested in Volunteering? Two New Committees Forming.
Making the Connection Committee:
The "Making the Connection" toolkit was developed in 2018 with the goal of changing the conversation about substance abuse by talking WITH youth and not AT youth. A new commercial tobacco and vaping prevention module is needed to expand the toolkit content and add training materials that the community has requested.
Committee volunteers are needed to help guide the development of this module. If you would like to lend your voice and talents to this project, please contact matt.cox@esd112.org.
Parent-Directed Campaign Committee:
Help build a local campaign to enable parents to understand and utilize their influence over youth, or share relevant prevention information tailored to their needs. This campaign will be informed by the latest needs assessment data and community input.
If you’re interested in design, developing key messages, sorting out data, and more, contact logan.morrow@esd112.org to get involved.

Tobacco Where You Live: Mapping Techniques
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Office on Smoking and Health has published a new supplement to the Best Practices User Guides, Tobacco Where You Live: Mapping Techniques.
The Tobacco Where You Live supplement empowers state and local programs to understand how commercial tobacco use varies within their communities and take action to reduce tobacco use in communities with the highest prevalence. Mapping gives programs the power to focus their efforts where they can have the greatest impact. Maps can help identify tobacco-related disparities, model possible approaches, and educate the public.
The guide can help you:
- Prepare to begin a mapping project;
- Create an effective tobacco control map in six easy steps;
- Learn how state programs have used maps to support tobacco prevention and control goals; and
- Identify the best resources and tools to get started.
The online version of the guide is available on CDC’s Smoking & Tobacco Use website at: https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/stateandcommunity/guides/index.htm#mapping or you can access by clicking on the image with this story.
