FEBRUARY 3RD - LAST DAY TO ADD / DROP EHS CLASS
~ FEBRUARY MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL ~
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on Monday, February 22nd from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM and Tuesday, February 23rd from 3:05 PM -5:45 PM. All conferences must be scheduled through My Conference Time.
You have three conference options: a TEAMS virtual meeting, a phone call, or face to face. We highly recommend TEAMS or a phone conference to reduce the amount of contact. Conferences are scheduled for 10 minutes with 5 minutes in-between to disinfect. If you choose face to face, only two adults and the student(s) will be allowed into East High School. Everyone must wear a mask.
We sent a link to My Conference Time to your email and your child’s email. Please follow the step by step instructions, provided with the link, to schedule your conference time. You will be able to schedule a time with as many of your child’s teachers as needed. The system will do it's best to give you options for times with all of the selected teachers close together.
Students should have finished registration for classes next year. Please look over the Verification Sheet of those classes your child has chosen. This is a great opportunity to discuss their post-secondary future and take advantage of all the college and career and technical credits students can receive in high school.
East High School’s goals this year are:
1) Raise the percent of students proficient on the math subtest of the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress from 2018-2019 to 2020-2021 by 7%.
2) Raise the percent of students’ proficient on Open Response from fall to spring by 10%.

EAST HIGH BLACK RAIDER GOOD NEWS and SHOUT OUTS!
EHS Staff Member of the Month
Michelle goes well beyond what is required to make sure students are successful. She takes that extra time to meet with her students, even when she has a pile of work in front of her. She always has a positive outlook on everything and makes being in the office a GREAT place to be.
Michelle is one of those amazing people that is always on top of her game. Her students love her and they are definitely her priority. She is a team player and makes East High a GREAT place.
A Note from our Nurse Regarding 11th Grade Students
Parents of 11th grade students:
There are new requirements for your student’s immunization status at school, please read the following so you know what you will need to obtain for your child so you can fill the needed requirements before the start of the 2021/2022 school year.
Effective January 11, 2017, the change requires a one-time dose of meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccine received on or after 10 years of age for applicants in grades 7 and above, if born after September 15, 2004; and 2 doses of meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccines for applicants in grade 12, if born after September 15, 1999; or 1 dose if received when applicants are 16 years of age or older. There is no grace period for this and it needs to be done prior to the school year.
Meningococcal disease caused by any serogroup is very serious. Approximately 10 to 15% of people with meningococcal disease die even with appropriate treatment. Of those who recover, up to 20% suffer from serious after-effects, such as permanent hearing loss, limb loss, or brain damage. Meningococcal vaccines are very safe and effective at preventing meningococcal disease. The meningococcal vaccine is 85 – 100% effective at preventing infection from the subtypes of meningococcus found in the vaccine. The National Immunization Survey (NIS) Teen, 2015 results indicate 75% of Iowa adolescents 13-17 years of age have received one dose the Meningococcal (A, C, W, and Y) vaccine. The national average for one dose of meningococcal vaccine is 81.3%. The meningococcal secondary school vaccine requirement will help Iowa achieve and maintain high adolescent vaccine coverage levels, protecting the health of adolescents, friends, families, and communities.
What does this mean for you? You will need to call your physician’s office and make an appointment for the meningitis vaccine. Most students do not have this requirement met as it is new. You will need to check your home records with the dates above, or call your physician’s office to see what your status is. If you have no insurance, you may call the Siouxland District Health Department at 279-6119 to schedule an appointment. Some of you may have received this vaccine but not given a copy to East High as it was not required, so if you have received it within the dates above please send a copy to school. Any records can also be faxed to East High at 712- 274-4670 with attention to the school nurse. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

~ WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOMS ~
The Great Kindness Challenge!
Ms. Zyzda's EHTV Classes Present the following PSA's
Ms. Kelly's Physics Classes
Physics students designed and carried out an experiment to determine the coefficient of sliding friction for a Lego and table top. Students also created shareable presentations using Sway or PowerPoint online that included videos of them explaining the physics and mathematics that led them to their final result.
JROTC Cadet Movie Nights
JROTC has started hosting Cadet Movie Nights. They held their first movie in December and continued with the second one in January. They pick movies that have a strong military, leadership or historical theme. The first movie was Hidden Figures, a historical story about pioneering African American women contributing to the success of NASA in the environment of the “Jim Crow” South. To start the 2021-year off the cadets watched We Were Soldiers, a story of exceptional leadership during combat in Vietnam. JROTC plans to continue this event every other week for the rest of the year.
