SHES Weekly Update
August 5th, 2022

Updates for the Week of March 27 - 31, 2023
Dear Shadow Hills Families,
Wow! I hope everyone was able to watch our SDSU men's basketball team win over Creighton or catch the highlights tonight. My house is buzzing from the win! It is only fitting to wear our SDSU gear tomorrow since it is college Monday.
This coming week we have our PTA-sponsored Book Fair all week and our annual Open House and Art Show on Tuesday, March 28, from 5:30 - 7 pm. We cannot wait to show off all the learning and updates in the auditorium. We have 27 more signup spots that need to be filled for the book fair. Any volunteer that signs up for two gets a $25 credit. Please help us keep the book fair open to all students so families can get an opportunity to shop. You can sign up for a time slot here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050D48ABA62CA5FC1-shes. Please look at the schedule below. You can send money in with your child or upload cash to an e-wallet that your child can use at the Book Fair. I'm looking forward to another fantastic week at Shadow. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Meris
Character Education - Citizenship
Here at school, we have been very busy learning about citizenship - what it means, and how we can practice it! Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help you child continue to learn about the theme of kindness through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it! We have really enjoyed exploring this topic at school, and I hope your family will enjoy it just as much!
Reading About It
Here are some books to help you learn more citizenship:
Practice It!
Together with your child, talk about what would make your neighborhood, family or community a better place. Choose something and do it together. You could make brownies for your neighbor, rake leaves, clean up a park, or any other that you or your child have.
Talk About It!
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about citizenship with your child:
- What do you think citizenship means and why is it important?
- Tell me about someone who is a god citizen. What makes him or her a good citizen?
- Do you think you are a good citizen? Why or why not?
- What is something you could do to be a better citizen of your neighborhood? Of your school? Of your classroom?

Open House and Art Show
We are excited to be hosting our annual Open House and Art Show. PTA will be selling burritos and churros. We will have our favorite mariachi band performing throughout the event. We look forward to seeing you and your family!
LCAP
The Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) is a component of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The LCAP is intended to be a three-year plan to improve student achievement by setting annual goals. Each of the priorities has established data requirements to track district progress improving student achievement. The LCAP requires Districts to gather input from students, teachers, parents, and community members to determine the goals, actions, and budget priorities for the District.
- Goal #1: Effective Instruction and Curriculum - Provide equitable access to high-quality classroom curriculum and instruction in an inclusive environment that promotes student success.
- Goal #2: Safe and Respectful Environments - Ensure all school sites are safe and have healthy and welcoming climates for staff, students, and their families so that all students feel connected and are motivated to attend and ready to learn.
- Goal #3: Equitable and Culturally Responsible Systems - Ensure systems and processes eliminate barriers to student success and are equitable and culturally responsive to the needs of our students and their families.

PTA Book Fair
We are excited to announce that our annual SHES PTA Book Fair returns to Shadow from March 27 until March 31. Students can shop before and after school, during a class visit, or during our Open House/Art Show from 5:30 - 7 pm on Tuesday, March 28. In addition, our Book Fair offers eWallet, a safe and secure alternative to cash. Create a free account to add funds and invite family and friends to contribute so your child can select their books. Any unused funds can be spent at The Scholastic Store Online or to fund a future eWallet.
Suppose you can't attend the Fair, shop at our school's Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping: https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/shadowhillselementaryschool1
We're excited to celebrate our love of books together at the Book Fair. We look forward to seeing your child there! If your family has a volunteer sign up to work two-time slots, you will receive a $25 Scholastic Book Fair credit. We are in desperate need of any help available. Please consider helping out, and we look forward to seeing everyone soon. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050D48ABA62CA5FC1-shes
