Hillcrest Newsletter
From the Principal; May 25, 2022
Dear Hillcrest Families,
Students may need the guidance and safety of adults in their lives to be able to navigate their own emotions tied to this week’s events in Texas in a healthy, safe, and productive way.
If students do not bring up the tragedy, then we will not make space to discuss it with them.
We will create a sense of safety by following our normal, predictable routines. By maintaining a typical schedule, kids feel the safety of regularity. We will stick to our routines as much as possible (but we won’t be inflexible).
We will indulge in the sunshine, connect with one another, eat lunch outside, walk/run the track during Marathon Madness, laugh, and find fun.
If students do talk about what they have heard from media or from family members, we will:
- Make time to talk and listen to their concerns and feelings.
- Keep explanations simple.
- Be good listeners and remind students that it is okay to feel upset.
- Model calm and control; children take their emotional cues from the significant adults in their lives.
- Reassure students they are safe.
- Remind them that we review safety procedures, practice being safe at school, and have trustworthy adults in charge at our school and in our community.
You can help your child by:
limiting the use of media consumption of this event to lower their stress and to maintain balance and perspective.
listening to your child’s fears and concerns.
talking with them about the event in age-appropriate ways (see Common Sense Media’s article on this topic): https://www.commonsensemedia.org/articles/how-to-talk-to-kids-about-school-shootings
We will continue to keep our front doors locked during school hours as an ongoing safety precaution.
As always, if you have questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to contact me by calling 541-756-8348 or sending an e-mail to sfletcher@nbend.k12.or.us . Thank you, Hillcrest families!
