High School Recommendation Request
UPDATE: students need to use their Microsoft account to login and access the form
Hello all! It is that time of year for high school recommendation forms. The team Luxor teachers (as well as Ms. Alvarado - Geometry and Algebra 2) have created a recommendation request form that students and families will need to complete in order to request a recommendation. This DOES NOT replace a verbal or written request to each teacher but rather helps us personalize our recommendations with student interests, goals, clubs, accomplishments, etc. We require AT LEAST 2 weeks notice for all recommendations. If you have any specific questions related to the form or recommendations please email me (jacqueline.beliveau@k12.dc.gov) or the specific teacher your question pertains to. We recommend that students and caretakers fill this form out together so that it is accurate and completed with fidelity.

IB Grading at Deal
As an IB MYP school, students are assessed on up to 4 criterion per subject group. Each criterion is given a letter grade: A, B, C, D followed by skill being assessed. An example: Students in I and S are assessed on A. Knowing and Understanding, B. Investigating, C. Communicating, and D. Thinking Critically. In each of these criterion, students will receive a 0-8 score on a rubric. These scores directly correspond to skill levels of student achievement. There are two types of IB Assessments here at Deal. Formative assessments and Summative Assessments. Formative assessments are smaller assessments given to students throughout a unit in which student receive specific feedback on a portion of an IB Criterion. Summative assessments are larger assessments at the end of a unit in which students show what they can do and are graded using one or more of the IB criterion. Teachers provide students with task specific rubrics with each IB assessment.
What does this look like in Aspen? In Aspen, all IB assessments are noted with the following % conversion chart:
0= WS
1= 63%
2= 69%
3= 73%
4= 79%
5= 85%
6= 89%
7= 93%
8= 100%
Summative assessments are marked in Aspen in using the criterion letter followed by assessment name. An example is: B. History research project.
DCPS Technology Acceptable Use Compact.
Update: We cannot distribute devices until we have ALL of these forms submitted. You can take a picture and email it back to me if that is easier.
In period one, students should have received and returned the DCPS Student Technology Acceptable Use Compact. The form can be found here DCPS Student Technology Acceptable Use Compact. If you have not already, please return this form signed to your student's period one teacher.
Students will be assigned a laptop after they and their parents sign the Student Technology Acceptable Use Compact which includes the proper care of the device as well as an overview of internet safety and digital citizenship. Team Best teachers will spend some time over the next few weeks going over policies and procedures regarding laptops.
The team email should now be up and running: Deal.Luxor@K12.dc.gov
Best,

Geometry & Algebra 2-Ms. Alvarado
Last week in Geometry, scholars continued to define congruence in terms of transformations and corresponding parts. The scholars also revisited their statement and reasoning skills to prove whether two triangles are congruent using Side-Angle-Side.
This week, scholars will use side-angle-side, side-side-side, and angle-side-angle criteria to prove two triangles are congruent.
Math 8 & Algebra 1-Ms. Beliveau
Math 8
This week in math 8 students took their first ANET assessment on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Friday students determined if triangles were similar or not similar using angle measurements and proportional side lengths. Next week we will begin module 4 which is our unit on equations. We will begin with proving the validity of a solution and then solving equations.
Homework this week: ALEKS HW#7 was due Friday
Homework next week: ALEKS HW#8 due Friday at 10PM and students will begin completing 5 topics along their pathway each week. The topics are individualized based on students' diagnostic assessment to provide topics that students need to master. Some of these skills are from previous courses and others are topics from math 8 that students will need to master.
Algebra 1
This week in algebra students took their first ANET assessment on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday students were introduced to graphing linear inequalities and systems of linear inequalities. I was out on Friday and students practiced these skills.
Next week we will begin Module 3 where students will be introduced to linear and exponential functions.
REMINDER: Students currently have 3 weekly homework assignments on ALEKS (accessed through Clever). One assignment is 10 questions due Wednesday at 10PM, one assignment is 10 questions due Friday at 10PM and the third is to complete 5 topics on their learning path due Sunday at 10PM. Please check in with your scholar to make sure these are complete! All students should have a 100% on each assignment because “quick retakes” are allowed where they only need to complete the questions they got wrong. Any grade under a 63% will be recorded as WS in ASPEN (waiting for submission).
U.S. History-Ms. McIntyre
This week students completed formative 3D which discusses whether the government is fulfilling its responsibilities.
HW: Ratifying the Constitution Map WS - Due Tuesday in class

Science-Mr. Muhammad
This past week in science, the students did an experiment that confirmed their understanding of the law of conservation of mass. The students also started our unit on heat and temperature. We discussed specifically energy changes during a chemical reaction and how to identify an exothermic reaction from an endothermic reaction. We also discussed different types of energy including kinetic, potential, chemical and thermal.
Next week we will continue learning about how heat and temperature is involved with chemical reactions.
ELA-Ms. Norton
This past week, students engaged with the themes, ideas, and essential questions of Unit 2: Unheard Voices. They analyzed and discussed a NPR All Things Considered podcast and article, as well as an excerpt from the NY Times 1619 Project. We focused on determining an author’s purpose and close reading skills.
Next week, we will begin reading Laurie Halse Anderson’s Chains. I recommend students pick up a copy of their own to annotate and read at home.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
