Guilford's CPPSET Newsletter
June 1st, 2022
From the Assistant Director's Desk
This is my last newsletter and my last week at Guilford College. My time here was short, much too short. What I will miss most are all the people I have met here and worked with. Guilford is a special place and that is due largely to the people who have labored to nurture this liberal arts institution in the face of so many obstacles. I will miss you all and wish I could gather you up and steal you away.
There is much I will take from my time with you all. The greatest is how much a democratic society like the one we live and work in relies on institutions like Guilford, and how much such institutions rely on the day-to-day work of staff and faculty. I can lean hard into cynicism. It can be hard not to at times. But I saw so many people at Guilford who understood the stakes involved in education while not losing sight of the person in front of you. People here work too hard. We all know this. I am grateful, still, to know you all and the commitments and vision you bring here every day, even though it can be a struggle.
Thank you all, and if you need to get a hold of me, you can email me at josephwl@gmail.com. I will still live with my husband in Winston-Salem. I hope the friendships I have made here can be lifelong.
Peace,
Joe Wiinikka-Lydon
From the Director's Desk...
Yes, Joe, your time with us was too short! I do have to say, however, that you have made a substantial impact on the Center and the College. We are excited to see you take on a new and important challenge and we wish you well. And, as they say, don't be a stranger (Is that even possible for you? I doubt it.).
2021-2022 has been a busy and meaningful one for the Center. Below we offer a taste of what has been happening and what is being teed up for the coming year. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns. Information about all things CPPSET may be found on our Google Site and I can be reached by phone at x2853 or by email at justadmj@guilford.edu or via the center's email address cppset@guilford.edu.
Be well.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
2022-2023 CPPSET Educational Development Grants
Internal grants for educational development are available for all teaching faculty. A complete list of the funding sources and their respective application criteria can be found here. The online application can be found here.
Applications are accepted on a continuing basis but are evaluated and funded following four submission deadlines: Sept 30th, November 30th, March 30th, and April 30th. We will send out reminders closer to the deadlines but please keep these dates in mind as you plan your work for the year. Applications made over the summer will routinely be included in the Sept 30th grouping of requests for review and approval. Please reach out to us if you have a need that you believe needs more immediate attention and we will attempt to address it.
We are fortunate to have the continuing financial support from our PPS Endowment and our Mellon Grant for Edge related faculty development. These $1,000 grants are available to support projects in four areas as described in this document.
The PPS Endowment continues to offer educational development grants for faculty and staff for work that advances values-based teaching and learning. Support for individuals, departments, or programs are described on the Center's Grant Applications page.
Continuing Call for White Papers on Ethical Leadership
Part of Guilford's Edge is to support students developing ethical leadership skills and knowledge. CPPSET is offering stipends for individuals or departments interested in writing white papers to explore the following:
- How the history, method, content, or problems of your particular discipline might enhance Guilford students' understanding, goals, and practices related to ethical leadership.
- How a more intentional focus on ethical leadership in your discipline might inform and advance the work of the discipline itself.
Any teaching faculty or educational support faculty member can write a white paper for their department or for an academic program they are affiliated with (including interdisciplinary majors, as well as minors). A stipend of $1000 will be awarded to an individual author. If there is a team of authors for a white paper, the lead author will receive the full stipend and affiliated authors $500. The paper should be around 10 pages long, though it can be longer.
This is a rolling invitation with deadlines arranged with the author upon completion of a brief proposal.
CPPSET staff and, when possible, the Faculty Development and Excellence in Teaching and Committee, will evaluate all applications and respond with an explanation of any approved funding. Please note that decisions are based on the specifics of each project, as well as the overall budget situation of the funds we manage. In an effort to spread funding to more individuals, we take into account how much each individual has received in the past couple of years.
Please email cppset@guilford.edu if you are interested in the Ethical Leadership White Paper project.
Recipients of are required to submit the final white paper to CPPSET. It is recommended that recipients also share the white paper with their department.

UPDATES
PPS Experience Minor: Forced Migration and Resettlement Studies
Ethical Leadership
Through Guilford's Edge, the college committed itself to developing students into ethical leaders. Through a new program coordinator of ethical leadership, Amanda Szabo-Huff, and the faculty-staff Ethical Leadership Council, as well as CPPSET, the college is developing concrete resources for ethical leadership on campus.
This past year, CPPSET added ethical leadership to its mission, allowing it to better support related initiatives at Guilford:
- There will soon be a MY CQ where students will be able to engage ethical leadership.
- A new student fellowship program will be starting next year. 11 incoming students have been accepted for this program that involves a four-year engaged course of study and hands-on learning.
- The Ethical Leadership Fellowship Program is funded by a generous commitment from the Mosca Family and a matching commitment from the College. This portion of the CPPSET endowment has a goal of almost $4.5 million dollars.
- A search committee chaired by Philosophy Professor Nancy Daukas in nearing the completion their efforts aimed at hiring a Visiting Assistant Professor who will provide courses in both Ethical Leadership and Philosophy. This new faculty member will be a part of the newly named Religious Studies and Ethics department.
NEW COURSE: Profiles in Ethical Leadership
CPPSET is offering a new course, PPS 150: Profiles in Ethical Leadership, in the Fall 2022 three week session. The course will be taught by Mark Justad and second faculty member and it offers a broad introduction to the concept of ethical leadership for any interested student.

2022 Guilford Dialogues

The theme for this event, Building Strategies for Economic Inclusion, is a crucial matter for our world in 2022. And both the approach and content for this event are consonant with the insights that inspired the addition of PPS to the Guilford educational experience. More information about the Dialogues can be found here.

Congratulations, Bon Voyage, and Thank You to Alina, Emma, and Diyaa!
We have had the privilege of working with Emma English and Alina Santos over the past few years here in our Center. Both of these amazing students have enriched the work of the center and lives of those associated with our work. Congratulations on completing your work at Guilford and capturing your undergraduate degrees. And we wish our best to Alina as she begins her professional life at Wesley Long Hospital and to Emma as she begins her legal studies at Washington University in St. Louis.
We also wanted to thank Diyaa Kaufman for her tenure this year as a CPPSET Student Fellow. She has one more year at Guilford, but we wanted to thank her for all of the work she helped us with.
