Maupin Area Chamber of Commerce
January 2019 Newsletter
Greetings from the New Chamber Coordinator
In his recent book, Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, war correspondent, film maker, and writer Sebastian Junger claims: “If you want to make a society work, then you don’t keep underscoring the places where you’re different—you underscore your shared humanity.”
As 2019 unfolds, one of my goals as the new Chamber coordinator is to continue strengthening the Southern Wasco community—the sense of common unity among individuals and the prosperity of our commerce. These are the attributes that recently drew me to Maupin as a full-time resident and which will continue to attract new citizens with similar values as well as visitors who appreciate escaping the bustle of 21st-century life to bathe in the tranquil beauty of our place and our people.
As I begin making the rounds to introduce myself to existing members and reach out to new ones, I also welcome your phone calls and emails. Let me know what is happening at your business or in your community. Suggest offerings you'd like to see the Chamber bring in to help you grow or enhance your business. Share your photos, your stories, and your upcoming events: We can post your community information on our social media platforms to foster involvement and continue building a society that works for all of us.
May you enjoy a peaceful and full 2019!

Kicking Off the New Year
Deschutes River Half Marathon Events on New Years Day
Visitors enjoyed a brisk and bright first day of 2019.
There's nothing like a beautiful morning run on the Deschutes River to begin a new year!
The Deschutes River Half Marathon Events, supported by the Maupin Chamber, and hosted by the Imperial River Company, ran on New Years Day and enjoyed 81official finishers from seven different states. Event proceeds helped supply the Maupin school band with new instruments and the volleyball programs with new equipment.
A new Half Marathon course record was set by Robert Pedersen of Eugene, Oregon. Robert ran the 13.1 mile course in 1:14:03!
The event, which also featured a New Years Eve Party at the Imperial the night before, filled all of the hotel rooms in Maupin. The event was organized by X-Dog Events which hosts many unique experiences in the Tygh Valley area, including the Pine Hollow Paddle, The Ride-Row-Run in Maupin, and new this year: the Tygh Valley Infinity Ultra Marathon.
Check out www.xdogevents.com and the Chamber website for event details.

Creative Minds at Work to Bring Art Co-Op to Maupin
As a result of the December, First Impressions Community Action Planning meeting, a group of local artists is pursuing the reality of an artists’ co-op in Maupin with the goal of creating a shared space for artists to work, showcase, and sell their pieces.
If you are interested in joining this group, or for more information, please contact Julie Whetzel at: maupinartz@gmail.com.

Our Volunteers Are Invaluable
We will be holding a Volunteer Meet and Greet on Thursday, March 7th at 11:00 at the Chamber office at 502 Deschutes Ave, Maupin. If you have volunteered at the Chamber in the past, we would love to see you again; if you have not yet had the opportunity to contribute your time and creative ideas, please join us for refreshments and learn about the opportunities to get involved in 2019. I look forward to meeting all of you who give of yourselves to make this community such a special one. We couldn't do it without you!
Looking Ahead
The Chamber will be joining with the City of Maupin to host a community Visioning Session in March. Please look for details in next month's newsletter and the Wampinrok, social media, and on our website.
