Great Things Are Happening at Haw River Elementary!
Week 32: Learning and Leading in the Fourth Nine Weeks
Last week was a very busy and productive week in our building! Students were right back in classrooms and putting first things first with their learning and leadership! Dr. Maness stopped by and enjoyed seeing the intentional teaching and learning happening with our students on the first week back from spring break. Our 5th-grade students enjoyed their field trip to the Greensboro Science Museum and represented Haw River well. Families engaged in many cool science activities at Duke Energy Science Night, and we wrapped up another successful book fair. Way to go, Lion Cub Leaders!
Our Campus Clean-up day was postponed due to weather conditions. We will reschedule and send out more information next week.
This week our 3rd-5th grade students will be taking their NC Check-In Assessments. On Wednesday, we will be celebrating Administrative Professional's Day. Haw River Elementary is so thankful to have Ms. Mendoza, Ms. Carter, and Mrs. Pacheco in our front office. They are dedicated to the success of our students, families, and school.
We look forward to celebrating them this week!

LION CUB LINGO
Each week during morning announcements, Mr. Bryan will announce the “Lion Cub Lingo” Words of the week. These words have been pulled from an academic vocabulary list that are most commonly used on formative and summative assessments. Students that use those words with adults in the building in the correct context can be rewarded with a House Point.

Habit 7: Sharpen The Saw
What It Is:
“Sharpening the saw” means taking time for ourselves every day because we recognize that it gives us the ability to do everything else. Habit 7 aligns with the principles of renewal, continuous improvement, and balance. Check out some of the ways you can practice self-renewal below.
Habit 7: Taking it Home
1. Balance Feels Best Invite a family member to sit on a four-legged chair. Ask: “What would happen if one leg broke or fell off?” Identify the four basic human needs: body (physical), mind (mental), heart (emotional), spirit (spiritual). Discuss: Is our family sharpening the saw in all four areas?
2. First Sharpen Your Saw Explain that on an airplane passengers are instructed to put on their own oxygen masks first before they try to help someone else. Ask: “Why would we need to put on our own masks first? Is that selfish? Why is it important for us to take time every day to sharpen our own saw?” Discuss as a family: How can we help each other take time to sharpen our individual saws?
3. Sharpen the Saw Family Brainstorm Label four pieces of blank paper with one of the following words on each piece: Body, Mind, Heart, and Spirit. As a family, brainstorm ways your family can Sharpen the Saw in each of the four areas of care. As a family, choose one thing from each of the lists that you would like to focus on and circle it. Commit to complete all four activities you have circled and set a date for completion. Celebrate together as a family when you complete your goal!
4. Plan a Vacation As a family, discuss options for a family vacation. Allow each member of your family to contribute to the discussion and brainstorm ways the vacation could potentially sharpen their saws.
5. To Live, to Love, to Learn, to Leave a Legacy As a family, discuss the importance of all four needs: to live (physical), to love, (emotional), to learn (mental), and to leave a legacy (spiritual).
