Message from the SIG Chair
Greetings Elliot Eisner SIG members!
Since our last communication with you, we have a few updates to share. First, AERA has revised its timeline for a decision about our permanent status position and our elections for new leadership. Apparently, there are a couple of other SIGs that have been “in-formation” longer than we have, and AERA will be voting on their status first in February. We expect AERA to vote on our SIG’s permanent status in May, and we expect to hold our elections in June. With this in mind, I am pleased to report that we have at least two people running for each of our elected leadership positions: Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. To those of you who have volunteered to run for office, I thank you for your willingness to lead.
I also wish to offer my appreciation to those who submitted a proposal to the Elliot Eisner SIG. We will inform everyone through the listserv and our March Newsletter of dates, locations, and times for our sessions and Business Meeting as soon as they are made available from AERA. In the meantime, please begin thinking about submitting a proposal for the 2018 Annual Meeting. It is never too early to begin looking ahead, and our goal is to double—or even triple—the number of proposals we received for 2017. Keep in mind that the more proposals we receive, the more space we are allotted at AERA for paper and roundtable presentations. Our sessions at last year’s annual meeting were well attended, and we recognize the need for increased time for inquiry and dialogue together. Our SIG depends on a robust number of submissions, and with your help, we can achieve our goal in 2018.
Regarding the 2017 Conference, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Stephen Thornton will be the featured speaker at our Business Meeting. As some of you know, Stephen studied with Eisner, and has adapted and developed Eisner’s ideas for the social studies. Please note that the Business Meeting is open to all, and we highly encourage all SIG members to attend. You can find more information about Stephen and the Elliot Eisner SIG at our website: http://www.aera.net/SIG177/Elliot-Eisner-SIG-177
We are excited to extend a hand of fellowship to a number of new members to the SIG, and wish to welcome you to our warm, thoughtful community of scholars! We appreciate your support and we hope you will find our SIG informative, useful, and engaging.
Thanks again to all for your participation and service,
Chair, Elliot Eisner SIG

Featured Speaker: Professor Stephen J. Thornton, University of South Florida
We are excited to announce that Dr. Stephen J. Thornton, Professor of Social Science Education at the University of South Florida, will be the featured speaker at our AERA 2017 Business Meeting. Professor Thornton's research centers on "how teachers act as curricular-instructional gatekeepers translating the formal curriculum into instructional programs for their particular classrooms." The specific day and time of our business meeting will be forthcoming, and ALL Eisner SIG members and their guests are invited and encouraged to attend. You won't want to miss it!

Contemplative Qualitative Inquiry: Practicing the Zen of Research
"Leading qualitative researcher Valerie J. Janesick describes how qualitative inquiry can be informed and improved through an understanding of Zen principles. She calls for a contemplative qualitative inquiry that draws on the understandings of both East and West. In the book, she explains how key Zen principles of impermanence, non-self, and nirvana apply to qualitative research projects; advocates important Zen-based practices of meditation, journaling, and poetic thinking; and presents Zen stories, meditation techniques, and writing exercises to improve research practice."
