Dear community,
And just like that- we’re getting ready to say goodbye to March and hello to April! How are you preparing yourself to enter this new month? How will you push yourself? How will you rejuvenate and inspire others? Where will you go to experience joy and laughter? These are all questions we encourage you to consider. What each of us do for ourselves and for the well-being of others, big or small, matters. As English primatologist Jane Goodall once said, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” In this edition, we’ve highlighted some opportunities to help you ring in the new month, and make a difference, and even perhaps share some laughs!

The first day of April, known as April Fool’s Day, has been celebrated for centuries in countries all across the globe. In the U.S. it has become an annual custom consisting of jokes, pranks and laughter. A lot of us have heard the saying, “laughter is the best medicine”; when was the last time you got a dose?
Laughter is important because it improves our emotional health, our relationships, and our physical health in the following ways:
Eases anxiety and tension
Relieves stress
Promotes bonding
Strengthens resilience
Boosts immunity
Lowers stress hormones
Decreases pain

She was a co-host on the Canadian cooking show “Four Senses” and a judge on “MasterChef” Vietnam.

Can jokes win a hostile room, a hopeless argument, or even an election? You bet they can, according to Cicero, and he knew what he was talking about. One of Rome’s greatest politicians and lawyers, Cicero was also reputedly one of antiquity’s funniest people. He also knew that jokes are hugely risky. Powerful as they are, the line between a witty joke and an offensive one isn’t always clear. Cross it and you’ll look like a clown; worse, you may even be out of a job.
In this presentation, Cornell classicist Michael Fontaine will share Cicero’s timeless strategies for using well-timed jokes to win over any audience while avoiding costly mistakes. He will outline the history of jokes from Aristotle onward, examine the risks and rewards of humor, and offer basic tips for writing your own jokes.
