Cyber Attacks in Education
What happened in 2020?
Last year saw a significant increase in ransomware attacks against public schools. Baltimore County Public Schools suffered a cyber attack and it disrupted online learning for over 100,000 students. Public school districts can be easy targets for cyber criminals. In the first half of 2020, 28% of all reported ransomware attacks affected K-12 school districts. However, due to remote learning and an increased online presence, the number grew to to 57% in the months of August and September. Cyber criminals can interfere with online learning. Also these attacks can compromise data. In about a third of reported cases data was stolen from schools and published online. This included personal information belonging to students, staff and faculty.
What Can Schools Do to Reduce Risk?
Schools need to ensure that their networks are secure and that they have plans and procedures in place for backups and restoration of data. Schools also need to vet all third-party software used. All software needs to be inventoried so that schools know where their data is and if vendors are compliant with components of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Software needs to be updated and training needs to be provided to all employees and students.
To learn more about cyber attacks and online security, take a look at the Spring 2021 issue of the DPSS Digital Digest. The New York State Regional Information Centers publish helpful guides and resources for school districts. Organizations such as Cyber.org, provide a Cyber Safety Series that include videos about common threats when online.

Protecting Student PII in Emails
It is also important to limit the amount of student PII being shared in emails and sending sensitive information via an email is not always secure. Gmail has two security features built into it. Here is a brief video on how to use these Gmail security features.
