Corbett Grade School
November 2023
Dear Families,
November is a month of gratitude for our grade school community. Gratitude is a simple way to help change one's perspective of the world. Learning to be grateful helps us to appreciate the little things in life that we tend to take for granted, which brings about a deep feeling of satisfaction that fulfills and nourishes us. Practicing gratitude or reflecting on what you’re thankful for is an effective way to deal with life’s chaotic, stressful, and tense moments. Grateful people tend to sleep better, have lower stress levels, exercise more often, and eat healthier.
I am grateful for our school community of curious children, dedicated staff, and supportive families.

Morning Drop-Off Change at Corbett Grade School
Beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 1, we are moving ALL K-6 morning drop-offs to Zone 1 (west end of the grade school). This change will help with keep our students and staff warm and safe during the winter months. Our Zone 1 entrance is out of the wind, closer for our students to exit their cars, and covered for our staff.
All afternoon pick-up routines for Zone 1 (K-1 and siblings) and Zone 2 (grades 2-6) WILL REMAIN THE SAME.
Students should NOT be dropped off in the morning at Zone 2. If you need to enter through the front office, please park and walk in with your student.

CogAT Assessment for Grade 2 Students
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple-choice K-12 assessment that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. The CogAT is a group-administered aptitude test commonly given as an entrance exam into school’s gifted programs. All grade 2 students, along with any grade 3 students new to our district will participate in the assessment. This assessment is a screener to help our school district identify students who might qualify for Talented and Gifted (TAG) services. For further information, please contact Dr. Shelia Morgan Osborne, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at smorganosborne@corbett.k12.or.us.
MAP Growth Assessment
Corbett Grade School students in grades 2 - 6 will be taking their first MAP assessment over the next two weeks. The MAP Growth Assessment will provide reports for each student and will present realistic learning goals in the areas of reading, writing, and math.Teachers will use this information to guide each student in their learning progression. Each assessment takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on the student. Breaks will be provided as needed. Results and goals will be shared with families on or before December 14.
Trimester 1 Progress Reports
November 16 is the end of our first trimester and progress reports will be sent by postal mail or email on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Our standards-based progress reports use the priority standards that have been established by our K-12 certified staff. Using standards allows our teachers to use learning targets that are clearly defined and aligned with the state standards. Students are offered multiple opportunities and ways through which to demonstrate proficiency. New this year are progress reports that are grade-level specific. This change was made to report on the standards for specific grade levels.
