The IMS Connection
Volume 18, Issue 3: November 2021

Hello Again IMS Families,
It’s hard to believe the pumpkins have been carved and the turkeys are now ruffling their feathers. A reminder that Halloween has passed, and Thanksgiving is on its way. We had a cheerful “Spooktacular” hosted by our Student Government with help from our National Junior Honor Society. It was great to see so many of our future middle schoolers dressed in costumes taking full advantage of this festive treat from their upper classmen.
November finds our CARE Club working on our annual food drive. The donations will go directly to Islip’s Food Pantry. It is an opportunity for us to truly make a difference in our community by helping our neighbors in need. Nonperishable donations can be sent in with children to advisory.
Continue to visit the district calendar for scheduled events. Our middle school clubs and sports are near capacity, so be certain to click on our Google Site for details. There is truly something for every child to get involved.
We are looking for your help. Our goal is to keep children outside and get fresh air, mask free, each morning upon arrival. Even as there is a chill in the air, we want to keep children outside. Please have them dress each morning anticipating being outside for 20 minutes or more.
Also, morning arrival in the middle school is getting more congested as the weather begins to change. We are asking parents to plan accordingly for student drop off so they can take their time and not speed through the parking lots to the exit. It's important to drop off students no later than 8:15. Beyond 8:15 students disrupt the first period class and are marked late for attendance.
For all of our veterans who serve and have served, we extend our gratitude. November is about gratefulness in IMS, and our learning community does not run short on this character trait. As we all reflect on what we have to be thankful for, we wish our entire middle school learning community an enjoyable Thanksgiving.
Thank you again for your support. As always, feel free to contact me at tmartin@islipufsd.org.
Extending healthy thoughts from a friendly distance,
Kind Regards,
Timothy P. Martin

It's hard to believe that it is already November. It feels like we were just celebrating the first day of school welcoming back all of the students to the halls and classrooms of IMS. This past month students and staff of IMS participated in several different advisory activities to recognize Red Ribbon Week. We devoted the entire month's advisory activities to engage students in meaningful dialogue about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and strategies to make positive choices. To end the month, students and staff participated in Spirit Week culminating with an event on Friday which encouraged all to dress in costume for Halloween. I can assure you there was no shortage of creativity when it came to costumes.
The month of November will be another busy month with many great happenings in the Islip Middle School. This month we will be holding our first Renaissance Rally of the 2021-22 school year. Our Advisory theme for the month of November is empathy and gratitude and students will participate in a variety of activities and meaningful dialogue about the true meanings of those words. Students will also have a little fun participating in advisory food drive contests. The advisory with the most donations will win a bagel breakfast. Not to give away too many details but I did overhear Dr. Martin claiming victory even before it started, and a few other teachers were already working on victory dances. Which advisory is going to win is up for grabs.
The month of November also brings the start of early winter sports. Early winter sports are boys’ basketball and girls' volleyball. They will begin the second week of the month. There is still time to sign up, so make sure you log into Final Forms and get your paperwork in. It's never too late to get involved.
Please check us out on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to view photos, videos, and news about amazing things going on at IMS. Our new Google Site has up-to-date info on everything you need to navigate your time at IMS, but if any questions do arise, I invite you to reach out to me via e-mail at jcohen@islipufsd.org or call me directly at (631) 650-8515.

Jason M. Cohen

ADVISORY THEME OF THE MONTH
November: Empathy and Gratitude
Focusing on empathy, we will remind ourselves that our journey together is always better when we don’t simply tolerate others who are different from us, but accept them as they are, understand their experience, and empathize with them. With Thanksgiving approaching, we will also focus on gratitude for everyday helpers and especially for our healthcare workers.
