Senior Seminar Speaker
The Senior Seminar class, developed in partnership
with the Michigan College Access Network, is now in its seventh year.
It allows 12th grade students the time and support to prepare for the next step in their education, whether that is at a college, university, trade/training school, or the military.
Each week, guests visit the class to share their knowledge and inform students of their many post-secondary education options. Here is a student reflection from our recent speaker.
Sheriff Scott McKenna
by Lola Abromaitis
On Friday, September 9th, we had the honor to have Lapeer County Sheriff Scott McKenna come and speak to our senior seminar class. The passion he had talking to us made all of us feel confident and a little scared about what we will deal with post high school. He started off with how he got into the police force to begin with. He told us that he didn’t know what he wanted to do, both in college and even once he got out. He reassured us that it is OKAY to not know. Nobody expects you to have your life decision chosen at 18 years old. While here, he also mentioned how our generation will rule the world one day. How we need to be the ones who change it. McKenna was fully honest with us, with absolutely no hesitation. His speech really made me realize that now is our chance to change the world. It’s making me personally want to strive and do something with my life to be a world changer. His words will make our actions speak louder.
McKenna also did something you wouldn’t expect anyone to do once they are done talking to a bunch of high schoolers. He gave us his personal phone number. He mentioned how he wants us to have it because he doesn’t want anyone to feel alone in the process of figuring out what to do with life, their needs, or their mental states of mind. That, to me, was very powerful because that shows that there are still good hearts out in this world of chaos. I love the fact that I know I can text an adult that will do anything to be there for us kids.
Sheriff McKenna moved mountains in our class. He motivated, reality shocked, and made us take a sneak peek at the future and how we can change the world. I really enjoyed his speech and hope to come into contact with him again. I have talked about his speech at least 100 times since last Friday. He is an earth angel and I would love for everyone to have him impact their lives as he did mine.
