Grief and Loss Experiences in Families with Young Children
When: Wednesday, May 30th, 2018 from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
Where: Nazareth College Smyth Hall Room 321
This workshop provides an understanding of the parents' experience of their own loss and grief while simultaneously helping their children with their first and early experiences of death and loss. It provides perspectives for explaining death and loss to children as a normal part of life addressing their developmental understanding. Practice vignettes will be presented with specific skills that will be modeled and practiced for working with parents and children.

Objectives
- Define the concept of grief.
- Identify various explanatory models of the grieving process for adults.
- Describe developmental differences in children's cognitive, social, and emotional understanding for death and the variety of ways children may express grief.
- Identify skills parents can use in helping their children to understand death at appropriate developmental levels.
- Identify skills parents employ to help their children to work through childhood grief.
- Identify interventions that social workers can use to assist parents with resolution of their own grief.
