Message from the Principal
Happy February! It is kindness month! We've successfully completed over 100 days of school, and I want to express our gratitude to all the parents and community members for their incredible support. Our students and teachers are putting in hard work each day to ensure that every child grows and learns as much as possible. The journey toward improvement is ongoing, and with your continued support, we're confident in reaching our goals. The state of Texas has not released the school letter grades yet, but we are no longer on any of their lists for schools they are monitoring. Our scores are continuing to improve each year. Even with the increasingly difficulty of the newly designed STAAR we are holding our own! Thank you all for your continued help to make these gains.
Mark your calendars for Valentine's parties on February 14th. We are always excited to welcome parents and guardians to join in the fun. Keep an eye out for notes from the teachers with more details about the class party. We do ask you to NOT bring latex ballons into the campus. We have a staff member that is highly allergic to latex. Additionally, save the date for our upcoming Family Science Night on February 29th. Stay tuned for further information! It is going to be fun and you won't want to miss it.
Wishing you all a blessed and enjoyable February. Stay safe, warm, and healthy!
Sincerely,
Lundy Atkins
NSE Principal
Attendance Give-Away!
We will have the drawing for the two scooters on February 5th at our Superhero assembly. Every time your child was in school everyday in a week, they were entered into our drawing. We will have a give-away each quarter. The more present weeks you have, the more chances to win!
UPDATE: We are going to start giving away two scooters every three weeks! If your child is here all week he/she will get a Popsicle and a chance to win a scooter!
100th day!
Locally Elected, Community Connected
We celebrated our school board at the January meeting using a mosaic theme. Our grade levels made wonderful posters honoring our school board members. Our third and fourth grade GT students worked tirelessly to make each board member a mosaic pencil holder. We appreciate each and every one of them donating their time to help our students.
Career Fair
The fourth grade had their annual career fair. We want to thank all of the people in our community that shared their careers with our students. They now have some insight to all of the choices they have. The students were able to learn about the following careers:
-Engineer
-Farmer/ Harvesting Equipment
-GVEC
-Firefighter
-Dental Careers
-Game Warden
-Car Salesman
-Natural Gas Compressor Mechanic
-K9 Unit Officer
-Wildlife Biologist
-Principal

Future Career Fair
A note from the Counselor:
During Care Time in the classrooms, my lessons will focus on Kindness. We will also be reinforcing the importance of empathy. During the week of Valentine’s (2/12-2/16) we will be celebrating Kindness Week. We will have a variety of activities and opportunities for students to learn about, show, and experience kindness. Talk with your child about how they can show kindness at home and at school. We want them to remember…in a world where you can be anything…be kind.
I will continue to conduct small groups and individual counseling sessions as needed. If you have any concerns about your child please feel free to email me. cunninghamj@nixonsmiley.net
Healthy Kid Tip:
Teaching your child body safety rules is a critical preventative measure against child abuse. Teach them the difference between safe and unsafe touch, safe and unsafe secrets, and who are safe people they can go to for help and support.
No Latex Balloons on Campus
We have a staff member that is highly allergic to latex. Even balloons in the same area without touching is triggering for the allergy. We will no longer be able to bring latex balloons onto the campus. Mylar balloons are OK. Reminder no balloons of any kind are allowed on the school bus. Thank you for helping us keep everyone healthy and safe!
Kindness Week February 12th-16th ~ Dress-Up Days
Capturing Kids' Hearts ~ Spark the Heart ~ Kindness
What is Kindness?
Kindness is the ability and willingness to express care and compassion for others. Kindness is a choice to use our time, talent, and resources to better the lives of others and the world through genuine acts of love, compassion, generosity, and service.
Why focus on Kindness?
- Kindness boosts positive emotions. Acts of kindness create neural pathways that enhance feelings of well-being and the natural flow of feel-good endorphins and neurotransmitters.
- Kindness is self-replicating. When we perform an act of kindness, it is likely to encourage others to act in a similar way.
- Kindness reduces stress and anxiety. Kindness promotes positive relationships with other people. Anything that helps you to build bonds with other people helps decrease anxiety.
Kindness in Action:
- Celebrate small things. Start each day with Good Things as a class. Publicly and privately affirm kind and thoughtful actions and attitudes.
- Create opportunities for family members to regularly affirm each other. Once a week, dedicate time for writing notes of affirmation to others.
- Model Kindness. Be mindful of body language, tone, and mindset. Kindness is learned by example!
