Message from the Superintendent~Mensaje del superintendente

Dear Wenatchee School District Family,

As Thanksgiving rapidly approaches and COVID-19 case counts reach an all-time high, I’m asking WSD families and our whole community to consider students when making their holiday plans by staying home, social distancing, and wearing masks to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and get kids back in the classroom.

Holiday guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is not to travel for Thanksgiving and to celebrate at home only with the people you live with or consider virtual celebrations. We know this is hard, and everyone is facing tough decisions about being with friends and family this holiday season. My family will be making some changes to the way we do Thanksgiving as well. Our partners at the Chelan-Douglas Health District and Chelan PUD have created a holiday gatherings checklist to help all of our families celebrate safely this season. While the inside of our schools continue to be safe due to the mitigation strategies put in place, we must rely on our community to lower the infection rates outside of our doors. I’m really making a personal plea: Our staff is impacted by this. While they are amazing professional educators, they’re also our friends and neighbors and are not immune to COVID-19. Our students are impacted by this, our families are impacted by this, and I think if you talk to any superintendent in the state, they would probably say these are the toughest decisions we’ve ever had to make.

We want to have all our kids re-enter our schools but for that to happen, we need to see the trend of positive COVID-19 cases decline and the health care system needs to be stabilized and less taxed. Please, take safety measures when you are with others outside of your immediate household so that we can stabilize our community and bring our students back to school.

Our kids are an example every day of what adults need to do to curb the spread of the coronavirus by wearing a mask, sanitizing and washing their hands, social distancing, and staying home if they’re not feeling well.

We all must do our part to be safe during this holiday season. We also know that many of you and your students may have additional needs during the holidays or concerns about your child’s social, mental, or emotional health. Your school counselors are here to serve and assist you, so please reach out to them about any concerns or needs you may have for your children or family. You can also call 211 to connect with a variety of social and health services.

As we continue to ask for feedback from our WSD family, I encourage you to complete the WSD Pulse Survey by Monday, November 30. The link was emailed to you and is also available on our website wenatcheeschools.org. Questions in this survey are about distance learning, hybrid instruction, and how you and your family are coping during the pandemic. This survey serves as an opportunity to share your truth with us in your own words.

I want to thank our teachers, staff, parents and guardians, and community for being such a special and essential part of the WSD family. This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for each of you. As this year has shone us all, we truly are stronger, together.

Nuestros estudiantes se ven afectados por esto, nuestras familias se ven afectadas por esto, y creo que si habla con cualquier superintendente del estado, probablemente dirán que estas son las decisiones más difíciles que hemos tenido que tomar.

Queremos que todos nuestros niños vuelvan a ingresar a nuestras escuelas, pero para que eso suceda, debemos ver que la tendencia de casos positivos de COVID-19 disminuya y el sistema de atención médica debe estabilizarse. Por favor, tome medidas de seguridad cuando esté con otras personas fuera de su hogar inmediato para que podamos estabilizar nuestra comunidad y traer a nuestros estudiantes de regreso a la escuela.
