November's High School Happenings

Congratulations to the Mathletes who competed in the November meet. Can you solve the first question from the second category? (see below) The answer will be shared in the December newsletter.

Two students were selected to represent Gananda at the Finger Lakes Regional High School Honors Band Festival which took place November 19-20, 2021 at Canandaigua Academy. Students were selected from throughout the Finger Lakes region and placed for the festival based on auditions that occurred in spring of this year. Senior Emma Guthrie was seated 1st overall on flute and freshman Cadence Strausser was seated 3rd overall on trumpet. Congratulations to these students for their hard work and efforts to earn spots in this festival!

A reminder to all student drivers: you are required to have a parking pass to park at the HS. If you have not gotten a red parking pass for this school year, fill out this form and submit it to the main office ASAP. We will be checking the parking lot for cars without passes!

The High School Half-Days will wrap at 10:55 to make our transportation after school run more smoothly. Here is the new schedule for your reference.

The Rachel's Challenge Club held a Kindness Recognition Drive in the month of November, asking students and staff to recognize those people who make the high school building feel like a warm and welcome place for all. Those recognized via survey were:

The Counseling Office and Work Based Learning Coordinator have been busy running grade level seminars in advisement since the beginning of the school year. They have met with small groups of seniors, sophomores and freshmen to have great discussions about future planning, study skills, mental health and many more important topics. They will begin meeting with juniors after the holiday break.

Here is a broad listing of the topics that they are covering in each grade level:

Seniors: College/trade school applications, finalizing resumes, completing New York State Career Plans, financial aid and goal-setting

Juniors: Standardized testing (what are they and should I take them?), further fine-tune future plans and develop step by step plan to reach those goals, update resume and NYS Career Plans, college visits and career shadowing opportunities

Sophomores: Using Xello for future goal setting, personal assessments on learning styles and preferences to help with future plans, updating resumes and New York State Career Plans

Freshmen: Xello lessons on study skills and habits, introduction to HS transcripts/graduation options and the importance of grades in future plans, transitioning to the high school

Just a friendly reminder! When reporting an absence, early dismissal, or late arrival, here are your options:

1. Use the "Report Student Absence" form which can be found on the HS website's Health/Attendance Office page
2. Submit an email to lhall@gananda.org with the student's name and reason for the absence, along with the pick up/drop off time
3. Send Laura Hall a direct message via ParentSquare with the student's name and reason for the absence, along with the pick up/drop off time

For pick ups: when arriving, please call 315-986-3521 and follow the prompts for either the main office (option 1) or the health office (option 3) to let us know who you are here to pick up.
