Inova Healthy Plate Club
The Inova Healthy Plate Club is off to a great start! The students played “Food Group Bingo” and learned:
- About the five food groups and why it is important to eat from all of them every day.
- Half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables at each meal.
The students also made Kale Chips. This recipe is a favorite, and it is great to see the kids enjoying kale!
Their goal this week is to try every food group.

ART NEWS
Mr. Brush has been getting quite a workout in the Art room this month! Fifth grade has been studying the color wheel. They've learned how to read the wheel and how to mix all 12 colors on it using only the 3 primary colors. They are now working on a painting of vases or balloons with watercolors to show how when transparent colors overlap, they create a third color. Fourth grade continues to study space in art works. They are learning how artists can use color, specifically tints and shades of a color, to create the illusion of depth in a monochromatic painting of a landscape.

Library News
Now that we've settled into our library routines, we're digging into new learning. This month, our kindergarteners, first and second graders have been learning about the types of books in the library, and choosing "just right" books for ourselves. Third grade has been focused on exploring online resources and using our online catalog to independently locate books in the library. Fourth grade practiced their scientific method skills by becoming CSI professionals for the day and solving book crimes. Fifth grade read The One Thing You'd Save by Linda Sue Park, and answered the question, "If you could only save one item from a fire, what would it be?"

MUSIC NEWS
Fourth grade musicians had a great time in the STEAM lab this month, creating musical instruments by building circuits. Kindergarten and first grade classes learned about tempo in music with fun games and movement activities. Fifth graders have started our recorder unit. We are looking forward to building upon the recorder skills we learned in fourth grade with more challenging pitches and songs!

Family Coffee-October 27, 2023 8am-9am in the Sterling Elementary Cafeteria
It was wonderful to reconnect with some of our returning families and to welcome new families at our first family coffee in September. We thank all who could attend. We would like to invite you to our next family coffee for light snacks and coffee. During the family coffee Mrs. Short will share and receive feedback on the Title I Family Involvement Policy, and the counseling department will review information about Sterling Elementary and its School Counseling program. We will review the mission and vision of our school, share goals for our school year, and ask for your input on how to best serve our school community. In addition to sharing this information, we will be discussing bullying and bully prevention. October is National Bully Prevention month. We have kicked off this month by starting our Second Step Bullying Prevention curriculum. We Hope to see you there!
School Counseling
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. During the Months of October, November, and into December, we will be teaching counseling lessons on bullying recognition, reporting, and refusing. Students learn that there are differences between Bullying and Mean or rude behavior, conflicts, and teasing. Students are taught that bullying is comprised of 4 components, and all 4 must be present for a situation to be bullying.
1. A person is being hurt (physically or emotionally) by a person or group of people.
2. The Hurtful behavior is done intentionally to cause harm to the person being hurt.
3. The hurtful behavior is done repeatedly
4. There is an imbalance of power. This means the person being hurt feels powerless to make the other person stop hurting them, they are often afraid, worried, or nervous about what will be done by that person.
We spend a lot of time helping students to understand the differences between behaviors often confused with bullying such as teasing and conflicts. Please review the two pictures below, as these are reviewed with our students to assist them in gaining insight into comprehending the differences.
We want all of our students to feel safe at school. We work to give them the knowledge and tools to understand bullying and what they can do if they think it is happening in our school community. We encourage them to seek help from trusted adults at school and to always communicate with their families at home as well.
