Palmetto Elementary's Attendance Policy 23-24
1. Students are expected to attend school on a regular basis. Students are expected to arrive at school on time and remain at school for the entire day.
2. Students at every grade level must meet the attendance requirements outlined in the attendance policy to be considered for promotion. Elementary students may not miss more than ten (10) days per year in order to be eligible for promotion.
3. See St. Landry Parish School Board Student Handbook for excused absences due to extenuating circumstances (page 16.)
- The responsibility for a student attending school lies with the parents or the legal guardian. If the student is chronically absent or chronically late to school or class, the parent and/or student shall be referred to the Office of Child Welfare. If attendance does not improve, the parent shall be referred to the St. Landry Parish City Prosecutor and Opelousas City Court.

Car Rider Drop Off and Pick Up
Morning drop off procedures:
Morning drop off begins at 7:00 am. Students need to be at school by 7:40 am if they are eating breakfast. Please do not exit your vehicle. A teacher or student leader will help to retrieve your child(ren).
Dismissal Procedures: Students are not to be checked out after 2:30 pm.
Car riders are dismissed at 2:55 pm. The afternoon car rider line will no longer be able to turn left in the parking lot. Go down Rideau Road and turn right into the parking lot. Please do not exit your vehicle. Your child(ren) will be brought to you by a staff member. Bus riders dismissal begins at 3:05 pm.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
Students must ride their designated bus route. Due to possible overcrowding of the bus, students cannot ride an alternate bus unless proof of residence is provided.
Box Tops and Community Coffee labels
Our school is still collecting Community Coffee labels. We are also participating in BoxTops (download the BoxTops app, scan grocery receipt, and earn cash for our school). Please continue to help our school!
Student Registration Fees
ALL SCHOOL AND TECHNOLOGY FEES ARE DUE AT THIS TIME. YOU MAY ALSO CALL THE OFFICE TO SET UP PAYMENT ARRANGEMENTS.
$25 school fee

Attendance -- district and school goal -- 95% attendance each day
Our district has set a goal of 95% attendance each school day! We did not meet the goal as a school for August. However, the homeroom who met the attendance goal for the month of August was treated to a snack!
St. Landry Parish School Board Attendance Policy
Students are expected to be in attendance every school day. The only acceptable reasons for being absent from school are listed as:
1. illness as verified by a physician
2. Hospital stay
3. Recuperation from an accident
4. Contagious disease as verified by a physician
5. Visitation with a parent who is a member of the US armed forces
6. Death in the immediate family
7. Natural catastrophe
Pre-k though 8th grade students will not be allowed to exceed ten (10) absences each school year.
School Identification badges (IDs)
All Palmetto Elementary students are issued an identification (ID) badge. Students are required to have their ID badges everyday. If your child forgets his/her badge at home, a temporary badge can be purchased for $1.00. If their badge is lost, a replacement badges can be purchased for $5.00. If your child only needs a lanyard, a new lanyard can be purchased for $1.00.
School Uniforms
Polo shirts in the colors of navy, white, royal.
Pants, shorts, skirts, and jumpers in the colors of navy or khaki.
Coats, sweatshirts, and jackets must be solid in color of white, gray, navy, black or royal with no writings or markings (students are not allowed to wear any coat, sweatshirt, or jacket with a hood)
Socks must be worn at all times in solid colors of navy, white, black, brown, or royal
Shoes must be closed shoe (front/back). No boots are allowed, except Rubber boots may be worn of days of inclement weather.
Belts must be worn on all pants that have belt loops in the colors of black, brown, khaki, white, navy, or royal.
JACKETS -- NOTE: If your jacket has a hood that you would like removed, Mrs. Laura Jackson is willing to remove the hood for a cost of $5.
Discipline Policy
Our school operates on an infraction system. Students acquire infractions for minor inappropriate behaviors. Once a student has acquired three (3) infractions, they are sent to administration for further actions.
Minor Infractions:
1. Cutting class
2. Unexcused tardies
3. Disobedience
4. Profane/abusive language
5. Possession of inappropriate articles at school, such as trading cards, comic books, games, etc.
6. Failing to use respectful terms required by for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.
7. Throwing objects
8. Refusing to sit in assigned seat
9. Dress code violations
Disposition of Minor offenses
1. The teacher shall do one or more of the following:
a. Counsel/warn the student.
b. Administer constructive punish work.
c. Contact parent or guardian by phone or request a conference to be held at school.
d. Written notification to parents of disruptive or unacceptable behavior, a copy of which shall be provided to the principal.
e. Other disciplinary measures approved by the principal and faculty of the school and in compliance with School Board policy.
f. Refer student to administration when necessary, using the proper referral procedure
2. The administrator shall do one or more of the following:
a. Counsel/warn the student.
b. Refer the student to the school counselor.
c. Refer to Saturday School.
d. Refer to Time-Out Room (TOR) or Character Action Training (CAT) class where available.
e. Seek and encourage parent/guardian involvement.
* NOTE: An accumulation of offenses may result in the taking of more severe disciplinary action such as short-term suspension or long-term suspension.
Students are also expected to follow all rules when riding the bus to and from school.
