Principal's Message
Dear OMS Community,
Trimester 1 Report Cards will be issued this afternoon. If students need academic help, all of our teachers stay after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:15-2:45pm. Students can stay after school with a teacher to get additional academic help. Parents/guardians, if you have any questions regarding grades, you can reach out directly to the teachers.
This time of year can bring about a lot of emotions for students. Our school counselors and adjustment counselors work with our students on managing their emotions and teaching coping skills. Teachers incorporate social-emotional learning in their classrooms to support students.
Here's a few strategies that can be utilized in school and at home:
- Students can talk with a trusted adult about problems. As adults, we can actively listen without interjecting or passing judgement so that students feel heard. This allows students to open up about what is going on in their lives and creates a space for them to report anything going on in their lives. (Parents/guardians, please reach out to us if there's anything we should be made aware of in order to support your child.)
- Students can talk with an adult before reacting. If something happens, one strategy is to talk to an adult about the situation before reacting to it.
- Positive Self Talk. Students can use positive self talk to help boost themselves up, even if things are hard.
- Social Media/Cell Phone Guidance. Outside of school, social media and cell phones can cause many emotions for students. We encourage students to talk to their parent/guardian about these issues. If something occurs during social media, students should talk about it with an adult before responding. Sometimes, the impulsive response can lead to a more negative situation. If a student is having trouble with a peer over social media or cell phone, it is a completely appropriate response to block and not respond.
Next week, I will be speaking with students about expectations in the Cafe during breakfast and at lunch. We are noticing some immature behaviors such as throwing food and reaching over to touch other's items. Students are expected to respect other's personal space, eat their food, and walk trash to the trash cans. If you can reinforce these expectations at home, that will also support us at school.
Thank you parents/guardians for helping speak with students about perfume sprays. We have seen an improvement in the building this week!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Crowley
Important Dates
Upcoming Events
Morning Arrival Reminders
For morning drop-off, we ask that you pull your car all the way to the second crosswalk (towards the parking lot exit). The morning entrance for students is at the second crosswalk (see below picture for student entrance). As the roads get icy in the winter, please drive carefully and be patient. Mr. Williams is in the parking lot at the first crosswalk helping direct traffic. Make sure to pull your car up past him all the way to the second crosswalk when dropping off your student. This allows for more cars to move into the OMS lot to drop off.
Mr. Donovan, Dean of Students
Mr. Donovan joins the OMS Administration Team as our Interim Dean of Students. Mr. Donovan has been a Grade 6 math teacher at OMS for 16 years and has transitioned to supporting students in this administrative role. Read more here.
OMS PTSO's Craft & Vendor Fair
Thank you to the OMS PTSO for a successful Craft and Vendor Fair! In the Cafetorium, NJHS students facilitated some kids activities such as face painting, craft making, and coloring. Student vendors were also located in the Cafe. In the Gym, we had many vendors, including Mrs. Benitez's class. Thank you to our OMS custodians and all of the vendors. Check out pictures from the craft fair below along with the OMS student vendors!
SPS Event Pass for Winter Events
The SPS Event Pass is required for OMS students who want to attend an event unaccompanied by an adult for specified SPS events. It is the same pass that was used for the SHS football games. If students already have a SPS Event Pass, they can use it for the winter. If students need a pass, they will need to turn in a permission slip in order to receive one.
An SPS Event Pass is needed for the following events:
SHS Winter Chorus and Band Concert
- OMS Winter Choral Concert
- OMS Winter Band Concert
- SHS Basketball Games
Happy Hanukkah! The first night of Hanukkah was last night, December 7th.
