What is Digital Citizenship?

Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately. Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology. Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use. Too often we are seeing students as well as adults misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do. The issue is more than what the users do not know but what is considered appropriate technology usage.

Digital Access

I will remember that not all people have access to or utilize technology in the same way. I will not treat others differently if they do not have the same options and I will try to help them accessing all digital resources as much as I can.

Digital Rights and Responsibilities

I will tell my parents or other responsible adult right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable. I understand that to have technology rights that I have to be responsible in my actions as well.

Digital Health & Wellness

I will tell my parents if I experience any pain or discomfort when using social media and technology. I will remember that I need to balance social media and technology use with other activities.

Digital Security

I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or jeopardize my family’s privacy. I will also keep programs such as anti-virus, spyware and adware up-to-date to protect our information.

Digital Law

I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law. I will not hack into others information, downloading illegal music, plagiarize, creating destructive worms, viruses or create trojan Horses, send spam, or steal anyone’s identify or property because I know that this is unethical and against the law.

Digital Literacy

I will learn how to use social media and tools (blogs, wikis, social networking, etc.) efficiently and I will help my parents understand how to have fun and learn things online and teach them things about the Internet, social media and other technology.

Digital Communication and Collaboration

I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message that is not appropriate. If I do I will tell my parents or responsible adult right away so that they can contact the proper groups.

Digital Commerce

I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for making purchases online. We will decide upon if and when online purchases can be made and secure sites for me to use.

Digital Etiquette

I will treat others the way that I wish to be treated when using social media and technology. I will keep in mind that my social media use affects others.

Childnet has produced 5 key SMART rules which remind young people to be SMART online:

SAFE: Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information – such as your full name, e-mail address, passwords, phone number, home address, photos or school name – either to people you are chatting with online or by posting it online where other people can see it.

MEETING: Meeting someone you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ or carers’ permission and even then only when they can be present.

ACCEPTING: Accepting e-mails, Instant Messenger (IM) messages, or opening files, pictures or texts from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages

RELIABLE: Information you find on the internet may not be true, or someone online may be lying about who they are.

TELL: Tell your parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online
