Penrith Selective High School
June Newsletter 2019
From the Principal
Dear families,
Thank you for another successful term. It has certainly been full of activities and I would strongly encourage everyone to have a relaxing break.
Just in the final week, we have seen a full house for MAD Night (Music, Art, Drama), Alumni night where 170 year 11 and 12 students met with an impressive range of former students, NAIDOC Day acknowledgement, announcement and induction of our 2019/2020 Prefects and Multicultural Day.
I continue to be so impressed by the way students work together and thankful for the support that each family provides not only for their children but the whole school. Of course, I am immensely grateful of the work that each and every one of the teaching and non teaching staff do to ensure every opportunity for the students. We are fortunate to have such talented and hardworking staff.
In relation to staffing, it is with great pleasure to share with the community that Jaclyn Cush, our former Head Teacher English has been successfully appointed as the new Deputy Principal. Jaclyn has shown immense intellect and care as the relieving Deputy since the start of the year and I am looking forward to having her significant contribution at a whole school level for many years to come. Additionally, Antoinette Pipio has been appointed as our newest permanent Head Teacher. Antoinette will continue in her role of Head Teacher Co-Curricular Programs which has been incredibly successful in ensuring students have as many opportunities through clubs, enrichment, leadership and non university scholarships as possible.
Please note that reports for Years 7-10 will be given to students on Day 1 (Tuesday 23rd July). They will also be available online through the parent sentral portal after this date.
Thank you again for a wonderful Term 2 and if you are travelling, please stay safe.

P&C Update
The Week 7 P&C Forum featured faculty reports from the acting Head Teacher English, Steve Lidster, and Head Teacher History, Clark Stone. They outlined the work that is occurring in each faculty as well as provided advice on how parents can support their children.
The P&C Executive Committee met with Penrith MP and Minister Hon Stuart Ayers, to discuss a proposal to construct a new teaching and learning facility on the grounds of our school. (see photos below). Details regarding this proposal have been forwarded to members recently via email.
The meeting was an opportunity to have an informed, transparent discussion about the needs of the PSHS community and the level of support that could potentially be offered by our State Government towards the project.
Mr Ayres has explicitly stated his commitment to advocating for the infrastructure needs of PSHS in State Parliament.
Mr Ayres has assured the P&C that he will liaise with the NSW Education Minister and invite him to meet with us at a later date to further discuss the needs of PSHS students and the community.
The P&C also purchased a retirement gift for Marry Ward from the canteen and presented it along with flowers, dining voucher and an engraved plaque to remember her hard work over 33 years. A full article is presented below. Thank you so much, Marry!

Marry from the Canteen retires!
Early June a special chapter in our school's history ended. Marry Ward, who has worked in our canteen since 1981 retired.
Thank you Marry for feeding thousands of students and staff over the years and for years of work on the P&C.
We will miss you! Have a great retirement!
Marry's Interview with Kieran Ha
The overall recount
Marry explained to us that her plans for retirement included visiting old friends, catching up and that she is in the middle of moving out of her current home. She hopes that within the next 5 years she will still be enjoying her retirement with her family by her side. Marry first began volunteering with the school canteen in January 1981, at this time the current Gym, TAS and Languages blocks had just finished construction. Over the years she has seen her fair share of students, staff and change within the school and the canteen. She remembered vividly early in her time with the school, the canteen had been broken into 12 times within the space of just a few terms costing around a thousand dollars worth of food. The canteen has also had a fire starting from a faulty evaporative cooler which forced them to cook out of the history block. But aside from all this occasional madness Marry says that the best part of the job was being able to make good memories with the other canteen volunteers and seeing all the students come and go. Of all the different foods that have come and gone from the canteen she recounted that the best sellers of all time were the donuts(her personal favourite), cream and finger buns, Coca~Cola(before they switched to Pepsi).
Besides her long career in the canteen Marry has also been playing and umpiring netball since 1982 until she stopped just two years ago. She will continue to garden - a hobby that blossomed out of her love for flowers, of which her favourites are: roses, tulips, irises, dahlias and gerberas.
She told us the biggest change within the school was probably the switch from comprehensive to selective, stating that back when Penrith High was a comprehensive school she occasionally had to step out to break up fights. She mentioned that she remembered when Ms Andreatta and Mr MacRae attended the school but couldn’t remember ever seeing Mr Chapple(unlucky sir). She’s served many people over the years and some of her most memorable orders include a chicken bearnaise pastry placed inside of a bread roll, Miss Graham’s cheese and tomato roll, Ms Cunningham’s sparkling water and Ms Clapshaw ice coffee milk, chicken roll and blueberry muffin. Although there has been several embarrassing incidents her most recent and easiest to remember was when she dropped a tray of chicken and rice spilling it across the floor. Its safe to say there was some amount of clean-up required.
******
Marry is what people can call a pillar, a constant in life. To our school canteen, that’s what she’s been, the occasionally intimidating but friendly woman who teaches you manners right from the start of Year 7.
Alumni Night
On July 2 we celebrated PSHS second Alumni Night with many Alumni returning to share their post school experiences with our current Years 11 and 12.
The evening was extremely successful with over 170 students attending. We have had nothing but positive feedback from both the students and Alumni.
A special mention to Max Peters and Amber Vella on a job well done in helping to organise such an important event.

Mathematics Update
Our Enrichment Program can only run through the hard work and dedication of our alumni. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge one such former student, Andy Pham. He was a diligent and high achieving student from the class of 2016, who has given back to the school through the Enrichment Program and by scribing for our Year 12 students in the HSC examinations for the last two and a half years. Andy was one of the founding tutors of our Enrichment Program. His enthusiasm, ideas and dedication has ensured the smooth running of the scheme. Andy is moving on and now focusing his time and energy into his university studies. On behalf of the Mathematics Department and his many students, I would like to thank Andy for all his help and the hours he has spent teaching the Euler and Gauss programs to our students. I sincerely wish him all the best in his own studies and his future.
The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition: (C.A.T), was held on Tuesday April 2. It was a one hour exam before school starting at 7:55am. It is a unique problem solving competition that aims to identify coding potential. The competition incorporates unique three stage tasks that encourage students to develop informal algorithms and apply them to test data of increasing size or complexity. The C.A.T. is the first stage in identifying and training students to represent Australia at the International Olympiad in Informatics.
This year we entered 11 keen students from Years 9 to 12. Over 19 516 students from 406 schools entered the competition this year. Overall our students achieved 1 High Distinction, 1 Distinction, 7 Credits and 2 Participations. From Year 9, Gurveer Khalsa achieved a High Distinction placing him in the top 1 percentile. From Year 10, Beonrik Pascual achieved a Distinction placing him in the top 7%, the remaining Year 10 students all earned Credits. They were Jamieson Berida, Cedric Kutschera, Anaf Sayed, Samuel Tint, Keeno Mendoza and Darren Pradhan. From Year 12 Aditya Mehta achieved a credit, while Daniel Su and William Gao earned Participation Certificates. Additionally, Gurveer Khalsa was awarded the Perfect Score Certificate for achieving 100% in the competition.
These students are now in training for the Informatics Olympiad, which will be held in August.
APSMO is made up of 5 papers given throughout Terms 2 and 3. This year all of Years 7 and 8 will compete in this Olympiad. The cost is $6.50 and this covers all 5 papers. The results of these Olympiads go towards their yearly report mark. Payment is overdue for this, so if you haven’t paid already please pay $6.50 to the Accounts office asap. The first Olympiad was held during their mathematics lessons on Wednesday May 22. The second paper was on Wednesday June 19. The next three papers will be held in Term 3.
The AMC will be on Thursday August 1 and is compulsory for all of Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. The results from the AMC will go towards their yearly report mark. All students should have paid the $6.50 entry fee and if you have accidently overlooked it, can you please pay at the accounts office asap. It is optional for Years 11 and 12, these students have registered their interest with me and they have been invoiced already this term. If they have not paid before the competition date, then they will not be sitting the competition.
Peer Tutoring is up and running again, if you would like a peer tutor to help with your mathematics please send an email to mathspeertutoring@gmail.com stating your name, year, mathematics class and areas of weakness. Sidharth Kumar will match you up with a tutor and contact you. This is a free service.
Last year we started a homework help centre for year 12s, this year we have decided to include all years. This runs at recess on Mondays through to Thursdays in room A.1.5. If you have a question with your homework/class work, you can just drop into room A.1.5 and ask the Mathematics teacher for help. You can ask as many questions as you like, but if you have a lot of questions regularly, we will recommend you get a peer tutor.
The Primary School Peer Tutoring program whereby a group of our year 9 students work with the gifted and talented students from Penrith Primary School is up and running. We meet every Tuesday recess in the library. Each primary school student has been matched with a Year 9 student and they work together through the problems. Watching both sets of students interact, grow and challenge each other is very exciting for myself and Mrs Wilkes.

Maths Student Profile
What do you picture when you think of a genius? A mad, crazy looking individual working furiously on a table with paper stacked everywhere, flying all around the place and a blackboard full of mathematical mysteries?
But did you know great minds are lurking in the middle of Penrith Selective High grounds, hiding in its vast rooms and alleyways? Wendy Li is one such student and I managed a quick talk with her.
So, to begin with tell us a bit about what you are up to in Maths?
Wendy: Currently, I am undertaking 2U and 3U.
Any tips you would want to give junior students?
W: From my past experiences, I think it is very important for you to keep on asking questions and clarify concepts that you don't fully understand with your teachers or your fellow peers. It is also very important for you to keep yourself motivated and have a positive attitude towards your learning. Even though you may think you are not good at maths right now, from my previous experience, by constantly practising and putting in hard work, you can improve your marks and your understanding of mathematics.
Are you actively involved in any other hobbies or extracurricular activities?
W: I have been actively involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Program for both bronze and silver. It was a great program for me to interact with different people as well as to improve my teamwork skills. I am also in Breakfast Club since Year 10. In my spare time, I enjoy learning a bit more on coding as well as learning another language.
What really interests you about Maths and what do you think is the greatest skill required in maths?
W: I like how maths has definite answers and how maths is challenging at times, as it makes me think differently to solve the more complex question. I think the greatest skill required is being self-motivated. To be successful in mathematics or any subject, I think it is very important for you to always be motivated and push yourself to do the work as well as motivated towards learning the harder concepts and doing the harder questions.
Are you hoping to do 4u and what are your plans in university?
W: I am hoping to do 4u next year. Currently, I don't know what I am going to pursue in university, but I hope to continuously be involved in extracurricular activities.
Watch out for the next newsletter where we will catch up with another genius from the grounds of PSHS!!!

The Great Rubik Cube Challenge
After seeing Abinav Chennupati from Year 7 defeat other experienced and older Year 12s in Term 1, several individuals called for another challenge this term. So, teams of three came into the competition; clueless, they were given 5 Rubik cubes to be solved amongst the three competitors while being timed.
Abhinav took on the real test, ready to compete by himself without the required other two team members.
As the competition began, everyone expected the primary competitors to be the Year 12 team of William Santoso, Akshar Maharaja and Kevin Zhong against Abinav. Early on, Abinav set the leading time of 1:31:62 single-handedly. As the crowd anticipated, William’s team managed to just defeat Abinav with a time of 1:12:65. As the race went on, no other teams could manage to get close to the time William's team had done. Then the last team consisting of Mustafa Bandukwala, Victor Zhou and Benjamin Renaud began their efforts. Ben finished his two cubes early on, with Victor and Mustafa both working intensively on their next cubes. They managed to finish with 1:10:03 on the clock, victorious by 2 seconds!!
Congrats Mustafa, Victor and Ben! Special recognition to Abinav for coming third by himself.
Here are the times:
Mustafa Bandukwala, Victor Zhou, Ben Renaud (Yr 12) - 1:10:03
William Santoso, Kevin Zhong, Akshar Maharaja (Yr 12) - 1:12:65
Abinav Chennupati (Yr 7) - 1:31:62
Rohit Warrior, Sanjay Yuvaraj, Rohan Fredrikkson (Yr 12) - 1:45:21
Sachin Madanayake, Nikhil Khatri, Ayush Arora - 2:18:35
Brayden Kwok, Shuva Khatiwada, Arnav Bhargava (Yr 8) - 2:52:92
Some reactions:
William: ‘wHAT…’
Kevin: ‘How did Akshar beat me…’
Nikhil: ‘The cube contributed more than I did’
Unknown: ‘Abinav train me’

Refugee Week
We celebrated Refugee Week with the screening of a film, displays and a visit from a refugee family.
The Staging Post is a recent positive refugee documentary by Jolyon Hoff. We were lucky enough to have Jolyon and one of the main subjects of the documentary, Muzafar Ali, visit the school and speak to us on assembly.
Muzafar travelled in a van with his family all the way from Adelaide to give an inspiring speech and then hold an engaging Q&A in the Library. Muzafar is an Afghan Hazara refugee who fled Afghanistan and Pakistan after persecution. In Indonesia, and witnessing the despair of his fellow refugees, he was instrumental in establishing a school for the refugee children. After two uncertain years in Indonesia he and his family were accepted into Australia. He and his wife are studying at university in Adelaide. His mother and his two daughters also made the journey from Adelaide to visit us.
Sophia Hadjimichael (Social Justice Club) and Armish Faisal (Amnesty International Club) helped host our guests and introduced them warmly to the assembly. Both students were in the middle of an assessment block and their dedication is a credit to themselves.
The Library had a display throughout the week of thirty refugee novels and thirty other books about refugee lives and experiences. We are also showing The Staging Post until the end of the term in our little cinema (the library Discussion Rooms). Feedback from the students has been very positive and I am always impressed with their level of empathy and compassion for other human beings. These are the foundations of a progressive society. We are a society first and an economy second.

Year 9 Camp
Year 9 completed the practice expedition of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award at Somerset Outdoor Learning Centre between May 29- 31. As a part of the expedition students organised their camp site groups and undertook a 12 hour hike which included carrying all clothing, food and equipment in a 12 kg rucksack.
The camp provided the students with an opportunity to explore leadership in various ways such as learn to take responsibility for their goals and choices. This also provided the grade to become further connected and actively engaged in achieving group tasks from navigation, cooking and sustainable living.
The key aspects of the camp was to develop resiliency and empower students with the knowledge and skills to overcome adversity in all contexts and environments. The other was to develop memorable moments through shared experiences with their peers and teachers.
Some of the most memorable experience at camp for Year 9?
“At our campsites every morning when it was freezing cold, we were able to hang around the campfire and get warm.”
- Deepak
“It was a different experience, but positive in the long run”
- Alan
“Completed bucket list goal; Hike over Wollemi National Park”
- Abigail
“I was strong enough to carry all my food, so I got to eat it all”
- Fale
“We learnt not to complain about heavy bags”
- Veerja
“The landscape”
- Sid
“Campfires”
- Rhytham
“The views of the checkpoints while hiking and camouflage”

A past Captain's Book for our 70th Anniversary/War Veterans Board
We are gathering information about all of our past captains. Our plan is to create a book which has the boy and girl captain for each year on a double page. There will be the name and year on each page. Each page is intended to have a school photo of the captain (when actually the captain) and a more recent photo beside it.
Underneath this will be four questions:
1. What is your best memory of Penrith High School?
2. What did you think you would be doing after you left high school?
3. What are you doing now?
4. What is the best advice you could give to current PHS students?
We may be able to get some of these responses from the profiles in the back of The Towers.
If you were a past captain could you forward a suitable photo and your responses to the four questions. This will be passed on to the relevant students. Each student has been allocated a five year period to research.
If you know the contact details of any past captain could you pass this information onto Clark Stone or email him on: clark.stone@det.nsw.edu.au
The intention is to present this book to the school in 2020 with copies for sale and one to be placed in the school foyer.
A PHS War Veterans Board.
We have obtained funding from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs for an honour board(similar to the one pictured above) to acknowledge to contributions of past PHS students who have served Australia in times of conflict. If you, or other past students that you are aware of, have served Australia please contact Clark Stone on the above email.
This board will be placed with all the other honour boards in the school hall.
History Debating
On May 24, our history debating team, which was comprised of Alison Joseph, Jasmine Amin, Bubleen Dhiman and Jingru Zhao all from Year 10, alongside Mr Hoekstra, visited Meriden Girls High School, a non-selective independent school in Strathfield. Our team met up at Strathfield station and we travelled to Meriden Girls High School from there. We were welcomed by their staff and we were given an hour of preparation time prior to the competition. We debated the topic “That Australia Day must change or die.”
This was a very insightful and remarkable opportunity to debate about the fundamental ethics and the history of Australia Day, especially as our team was opposing the topic. Using primarily historical opinion, events and statistics, both teams presented comprehensive and memorable arguments. This was the very first time Penrith has competed in the History Debating Competition, so it was a very unique experience. Unfortunately, our team lost the debate but the team enjoyed the educational opportunity and are looking forward to competing again next year.

Medieval Day 2019
On 28 June, Year 8 had a very entertaining day - Medieval Day!
They experienced first hand what armour and weaponry, eg shields, swords and bows and arrows were used in Medieval times.
Thank you Mr Stone for such an enjoyable way to learn History!

Year 7 Science Incursion
This term Year 7 has been learning about animal classification in Science. This was highlighted by a reptile incursion in the school hall. It was great to see the students enjoying the show and learning interesting facts about tortoises, bearded dragons, blue tongues and snakes. Who knew Australia was home to such deadly snakes! The highlight was the opportunity to get up close and personal with the suspiciously scaly guests particularly Bruce, the olive python and Thomas, the tortoise.
Note: no students or animals were harmed in any way on the day.
NSW Titration Competition
Mid-June some of our Chemistry students from Years 11 and 12 attended the NSW Titration Competition at Western Sydney, Hawkesbury. We are proud to announce that out of 25 teams competing, Penrith High School was placed 2nd, 5th and 8th.
Congratulations to Sharon Peters, Chinnu Anil and Vaishvi Doctor who placed 2nd.
