In the 7th grade students have the opportunity to earn 15 student service learning hours through their social studies class. What is Student Service Learning? Service learning is a teaching tool that provides the student with an opportunity to make learning real and relevant to their everyday lives by putting into practice the concepts learned in class through a volunteer experience. Through guided reflection activities and individual student research, the course outcomes and the volunteer experience come together and the connection between the two is made; this is the “academic” learning part of service learning!

Remember all students need 75 hours in order to graduate from high school. This is an excellent opportunity to earn 15 hours toward that requirement. Check out the link below for all of the important SSL

It is going to be a busy few months for our 8th grade students and their parents as they begin their transition into high school. Here are a few reminders of upcoming events

• Day on the Job is February 2, 2017. Students who have turned in a permission slip for day on the job will receive a reflection sheet on Tuesday, January 31st. Reflection sheets are due on February 3rd to first period teachers.

• High School Transition Nights are February 7th and 8th at BHS. Students will receive their Program of Studies handbook on January 30th and January 31st. The Program of Studies provides information about high school courses.

• Field Trip to Washington DC Holocaust Museum is scheduled for February 27th

If Washington County Public Schools does not have to close due to inclement weather in February or March our tentative last day of school will be May 31st. Pending approval we are planning our 8th grade Hershey Park field trip for May 22. Stay tuned for additional information as May will be a busy month.

Just a reminder that grades for marking period two are posted in ParentVue. If you need assistance accessing your ParentVue account please do not hesitate to contact us. For second marking period we had 393 students earn honor roll or distinguished honor roll. All students should be receiving their honor roll certificate by Monday. Congratulations to all of our students we are very proud!

Our next PTO Meeting is scheduled for February 7th at 6 p.m. in the media center. Please join us if you are available!

Parents, when your students are scheduled to leave the building for an appointment, please remember to send a note with your student in the morning. This practice allows us to add their name to the attendance bulletin and alerts teachers to their absence from their class. In addition, it allows the student to leave the classroom without being called, ensuring they are ready to go when you arrive. Thank you for your cooperation and support!

Often times those who are in need may not be the ones who are reading this newsletter. One of the nicest things about our community is how we all try to come together each other.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday February 3 at 3:45 to 4:15 in the library. We will finish planning the Multi-cultural night.
