Year 11 Wellbeing speaker
As part of our ongoing support of students and they begin the preparation for their GCSE Exams (starting in 40 school days), we invited an outside speaker from the NHS to speak to pupils about Exam Wellbeing. All Year 11 pupils attended and they received information about the best ways to look after themselves during this stressful period. In addition, pupils will be offered some workshops for small groups to receive more 1-1 support in the coming weeks.
Curriculum Focus:
Each week we will share with you what our Year 7, 8 and 9 students are learning in our focus departments this term, below you will find the topics for Geography:
Year 7 - Settlement and Urbanisation:
This topic will provide a foundational knowledge of core concepts to geography, examining changes in population as well as where and why people have settled in the places they have. This topic is delivered through the context of the UK, specifically focusing on the local area as main case study and looking at the changes in the urban setting the impacts of those changes. Students will study the general problems associated with urban living using Corby as a case study including:
Problems faced with urban area.
Rural change?
Management of Cities of the future.
Homework:
Key word Spelling Test 2 – Key terms from the topic set on SatchelOne.
Year 8 - Development:
Students will explore the intricate balance and interconnections within different ecosystems. Two key ecosystems studied are the tropical rainforest and coral reefs.Tropical rainforests are lush and diverse ecosystems found near the equator. They are characterized by high temperatures, abundant rainfall, and dense vegetation. These forests house an incredible variety of plant and animal species, with some still undiscovered. They provide a habitat for countless organisms, acting as a home to an estimated 50% of all terrestrial species. Tropical rainforests also play a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis. However, they face significant threats such as deforestation, which leads to habitat loss, biodiversity decline, and contributes to climate change.Coral reefs, often referred to as the "rainforests of the sea," are vibrant underwater ecosystems formed by colonies of tiny animals called coral polyps. These reefs support an extraordinary array of marine life, providing shelter, breeding grounds, and food sources for numerous species. They also contribute to coastal protection by absorbing wave energy and preventing erosion. However, coral reefs are highly sensitive to environmental changes, especially increases in sea temperatures. When exposed to stressors like pollution, overfishing, and ocean acidification, corals undergo bleaching, which can lead to their death and the collapse of the entire ecosystem. Protecting and preserving coral reefs is crucial for the survival of marine biodiversity and the well-being of coastal communities that rely on them.By studying these ecosystems, students gain an understanding of the complex relationships between living organisms and their environments. They explore the importance of biodiversity, the impact of human activities on these delicate ecosystems, and the need for sustainable practices to ensure their long-term survival.
Questions:
1. What are the threats to rainforests?
2. How can the government save the tropical rainforest?
3. What are the features and adaptations of coral reefs?
Homework:
Key word Spelling Test 2 – Key terms from the topic set on SatchelOne.
Year 9 - Globalisation:
This term, year 9 students have been exploring the earths resources. During this students look at the advantages and disadvantages of both non renewable and renewable sources of energy, they explore the changing patterns of access to water and food. Students look at the decision-making process behind locating a new windfarm and undertake a decision-making exercise relating this to prepare them for GCSE Geography. Finally, they look at the ever increasing problem of single use plastics and the long term effects or more waste management.
Students will complete a Wind Farm debate in lesson one and two and discuss the war on plastic.
Homework:
Key word Spelling Test 2 – Key terms from the topic set on SatchelOne.
Next term sees an exciting development in Geography with a new topic designed in line with our newly gain quality mark including our specialism of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The topic explores the locality of Corby while introducing students to the ever-growing skills in GIS. This will be an exciting topic for students to explore. This supports the whole school ethos of helping create the most employable students in Corby as the skills they will start to develop are in ever growing demand globally and form the background to so much of what we engage with on a day-to-day basis.
