End of Year Principal's Message
by Mrs. Wetzel
Aloha Hale`iwa Families,
Happy Summer! It has been an OUTSTANDING school year! It was so nice to finally be able to return to a “normal” school life. Our students were able to enjoy our annual traditional activities like the Halloween March, Chinese New Year Lion Dance and Egg Dash. They were also able to take field trips again. Our classes visited Iolani Palace, The Children’s Museum, Waimea Valley, Loko Ea, Na Mea Kupono Lo`i and the Honolulu Zoo. We are already planning more field trips for next school year. Of course, we cannot forget the AMAZE-ing Robotics season that our Canefires had this year. We celebrated a second state championship in the Teamwork Challenge category. Our 6th grade team qualified for the Worlds Competition and brought home our very first trophy from the Worlds Competition – the AMAZE award.
Our faculty and staff also spent a considerable amount of time revisiting our safety procedures throughout the school year, in light of all of the unfortunate events that have occurred too often in our country in the last few years. The Vulnerability Assessment by the DOE helped us to make significant changes to some of our practices to enhance overall safety for everyone. Our staff also participated in an all day training with the Blue Lines Solution group, which is comprised of former HPD officers who were all members of special tactical units. This training was specifically designed to help us to be better prepared for active threat situations.
All of our staff have worked extremely hard to help our students be the best they can be. We are extremely fortunate to have such conscientious and caring teachers, educational aides and support staff. They did an AMAZE-ing job this year!
As we say “aloha” to this school year, we are already gearing up for next school year. To help you prepare for next school year, here is some important information.

First day of school for students*
*Hale`iwa has been approved for two additional waiver days for next school year. We will be using one of those waiver days on Monday, August 7. This is why Hale`iwa students will begin on August 8, 2023, one day later than the official start of the school year.
We would also like to extend a very special “Congratulations” to our Vice Principal, Mrs. Terada, who will be welcoming her first child this summer. Mrs. Terada will be on maternity leave for the first quarter of next school year. We are very excited for her and we cannot wait to meet the newest member of our Hale`iwa `ohana.
Finally, we want to express our deepest appreciation to all of our families for your support of our school. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to raise a grand total of $4335.00 from our spring fundraiser! These funds help to cover all of the different student activities that we have each year. We are also grateful for your patience and understanding that have helped us to make it through the bumpy times. We hope that everyone has a safe, fun and relaxing summer break. See you soon!
6th Grade Graduation
Congratulations to our thirty-three sixth graders on graduating! We wish them all the best in their future adventures at Waialua High and Intermediate School.
5th vs. 6th Grade Kickball Game
A big mahalo goes out to Coach Williams, Coach Kawika and Coach Haiola for helping to make the 5th vs. 6th Grade kickball game this week one of our BEST EVER! It was a competitive AND fun game. Most importantly, both our 5th and 6th graders demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship. It was also nice to see so many of our kids give it a try -- even some of our shyest students got out there to kick.
Thank you to all of the cheerleaders from pre-school to 6th grade. And thank you to DJ E. Pai who kept up the excitement for our little ones by providing music for them to dance to.
EOEL: End of Year Celebration
by Mrs. Angelica
We can't believe the year has come and gone! Our classroom has been filled with so much love and joy this year, and it is so bittersweet to be sending them all to Kindergarten next school year! We celebrated our amazing year with a fun pizza, ice cream, and glow in the dark dance party! So proud of how much they each have grown! We really built our own little special Ohana this year!
Preschool: Field Trips
Field trips are a great way to make real-world connections to what we learn about in school and gain experiences that trigger curiosity and lay a foundation for rich and meaningful learning. Ms. Jes’ and Ms. Mary Grace’s class has had so many wonderful field trips this year. One of our visits this spring was to Waimea Valley. The children had fun exploring the valley. They played games, planted plants and used their observation senses to hear, see and smell the special natural wonders found there. The students learned about the important connection plants and animals share with fresh water (wai). They were also very fortunate to witness many birds thriving in the valley. They saw peacocks, many different song birds and ducks. One very special bird sighting was of an endangered ‘alae ‘ula and her three sweet little baby offspring. It was a truly special visit to the valley and a memorable experience. If you haven’t been or haven’t been recently, go check it out for free every Thursday (for Kama’aina)!
Kindergarten Registration
If your child is attending Kindergarten next school year, please come to the office soon to register him/her. Our Kindergarten Camp runs June 5-23 and we would love all of our Kindergarteners to attend. They will get to know their teachers, meet their classmates, and begin learning classroom routines that will help them when school begins.
Kindergarten: Field Trip to North Shore Stables
by Ms. Brooks
Kindergarten had so much fun last week at the North Shore Stables! Thanks to a generous family member of one of our students, we were able to enjoy this awesome field trip! We got to ride horses and even learned how to groom them. We also got to touch and feed pigs, goats, and tortoises. There were also lots of chickens, ducks and a sweet dog! It was such a fun time!
Team I1: Field Trip to the Zoo
Our class went to the zoo for our last field trip of the year. We were able to see most of the Savannah animals, and we learned lots of cool facts about the different animals we saw. The peacocks tried to steal our lunches, but were unsuccessful. It was neat to see them so close though! We ended our trip by having fun on the playground and then getting on the bus to come back to school.
Fourth Grade: Show and Tell
In 4th grade we finished the last days of school with Show and Tell. Many students volunteered to share important and valuable things about themselves or new talents that we didn't know about! We all learned that some of us have special animals in our families and even got to meet a few in person. We also had a special guest artist, Aunty Alana, who taught us how to paint the Rainbow Bridge with Acrylic paints. It was an awesome last week in 4th Grade!
Sixth Grade: Aloha Luncheon at Stonefish
As the school year ended, the 6th graders celebrated their accomplishments and successes at Stonefish in Haleiwa. Thank you to Ms. Kanani for making their time at Stonefish a memorable one by providing great service! The students enjoyed either a fish sandwich, Ola Boy’s Katsu Sandwich or a hamburger loco moco. A surprise dessert of molten chocolate ala mode made the day even more special! What a way to celebrate with friends in our very own community, Haleiwa. Mahalo Stonefish for your generosity and for supporting our students!!!
