Walton County STAR Student
The Walton Chamber of Commerce hosted an event to celebrate the STAR students and teachers of each Walton County school at a banquet on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Not only is Timothy Pham GWA's STAR student, he also tied for regional winner with Loganville High School's STAR student. STAR students are seniors with the highest SAT score and rank in the top 10% of their class.
Congratulations to Timothy and STAR teacher Melissa Page!
Next Level Problem Solving
Mrs. Quinlan's Honors Precalculus students spent two class periods practicing what they learned about polar coordinates and equations. Polar equations are used in mechanical systems, spherical coordinates, aeronautics, navigation, as well as with magnetic, temperature and electric fields. The students worked together in groups to make it through a scavenger hunt which required serious problem solving and deep thinking.
Finding a Match
Eighth graders in Mrs. Byrd’s English class explored narratives this week by choosing “blind dates.” Students brought in narratives they were currently working on, including poems, short stories, and plays. They placed their work inside an envelope decorated with clues about its contents. Next, students had the opportunity to choose their “date” in hopes of finding a match or something they enjoyed reading. This lesson offered a fun and creative way to examine literature genres.

The Dangers of Vaping
Middle and upper school students listened to Walton County Health Department educator Kelsey Flick and our SRO Joey Holliday during LINX period this week as they discussed the real dangers of vaping. Ms. Flick explained the detrimental effects of poisonous vape chemicals on the body as well as its impact on the teenage brain and mental health. Students watched short videos that included personal stories from teen vape users who suffered from addiction and resulting physical health issues and increased anxiety. Officer Holliday reiterated the risks of vaping and explained the legal consequences of using vape pens and products. Both speakers offered resources for students looking to quit vaping and provided a list of healthy habits that can reduce stress and promote overall well-being. Thank you to Ms. Flick and Officer Holliday for sharing valuable information and advice with our students.

Conceptual Art
Mrs. Stumpf’s Honors Art class allows students to utilize the skills and techniques they’ve learned over the years in foundation courses while also exploring new mediums to discover their own unique artistic style. Juniors Boston Kuzava (pictured left) and Alek Spoon (pictured right) spent the beginning of the year conceptualizing the overall vision of their artwork in order to produce a cohesive collection of their best pieces to display in show at the Monroe-Walton Center for the Arts this spring.
Learning About Jacob Lawrence
Third-grade students have been studying African American Artist, Jacob Lawrence. Born and raised in Harlem, Lawrence was an important contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, a period during the 1920's when African American achievements in art, music, and literature flourished. GWA students learned about the art of Jacob Lawrence and how he used pattern and repetition to capture the rhythm of the neighborhood that surrounded him. They loved creating artwork depicting their own neighborhoods using colorful paper and shapes.
