MLC Weekly News and Notes
November 20-24
Hello, MLC community. I wish I had more to share with you. I hope you are all hanging in there as best as you can. I am still hopeful we will get to be together soon. I know we will get through this.
Until then, here are some resources and reminders:
Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences: CANCELLED
These will be rescheduled by the district once the contact is settled.
MLC Craft Faire: POSTPONED until February
Unfortunately, we will not have enough time to prep for this as an end of November event. HOWEVER - it has already been rescheduled for February 15th! This will allow more time for our crafters to prepare!
I hope you all have a safe and wonderful fall break!
Best,
Suezann
November is Native American Heritage Month!
Shout out to Lula and Roxy for putting together our Celebration of Cultures board!
Goodbye, Hello!
We bid goodbye to our long time MLC teacher, John Walrod. John has served MLC for over a decade. We wish him well on his new journey outside of the classroom - supporting teachers - at Cesar Chavez!
On that - HELLO to our new 3rd grade teacher, Kiana Christian!
Kiana is an experienced elementary teacher who is also a licensed school counselor! She comes to us from her most recent teaching position at Kairos PDX.
Hi! My name is Kiana. I taught 3rd grade for three years in Oklahoma, where I am originally from. In Portland, I have been a school counselor and a 1st grade teacher. I am excited to return to 3rd grade! I have been fortunate to have had so many great elementary teachers that provided me with a strong foundation. That foundation changed the trajectory of my life as well as my family's life. I want to set students up for success and help them discover what gifts they were meant to share with the world. Outside of teaching I live in Northeast Portland with my partner and our dog, Cashew. I love art and have recently gotten into pottery. Most of my weekend is spent making slightly mediocre art in the studio or baking.
Kiana will be an amazing fit for our students' needs! Welcome to MLC, Kiana!!
PTSA News
NEW DATE for The MLC Craft Fair is February 15
We know you have all been working so hard on getting your crafts ready to share with our amazing community, but due to the closure of the schools in the past few weeks, our 4x5 Craft Fair elective team has not been able to do the work needed to host the fair on November 30. So please join us on our new date of February 15 for the MLC Craft Fair.
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Committee
The PTSA is looking for a few extra hands to help spread the love to our MLC teachers throughout the year, but especially at Solstice and during Teacher Appreciation week. Reach out to Sierra at to find out more.
Lunchtime Helpers
Volunteers are needed 11:30-12:30 M-Th to provide extra help on the playground and wherever help is needed while the kids are at lunch/recess. Sign up HERE
You will need to complete your PPS background check. The background check does take some time, but it’s good for 3 years. You can apply for the background check at www.pps.net/volunteer
Thank you to our Parking Volunteers
We’ve completed our second full season of parking and it has been a fantastic (and dare I say–fun) way to fundraise, but also connect with the larger Portland community as they come to park on our campus and learn more about our school. Thank you to all who came out this year and helped us park over 1200 vehicles between February and October. See you in the spring when the season starts back up.
BottleDrop
So far this school year we have had 100+ bags donated for MLC which have resulted in over $900 for our school. Thank you and keep it up! Grab one of our MLC labeled BottleDrop blue bags to collect your redeemable containers in. Then drop them off at one of the BottleDrop bag collection points.
MLC does not have space to store full bags, so please drop the bags off at one of these locations near MLC or find another convenient location HERE
Trader Joe's - NW Glisan and 21st
Fred Meyer - NW Burnside and 20th
New Season's - NW Raleigh and 22nd
Contact Adam Perryman for more information or to get more bags.
Donations Needed for OBOB at MLC!
Oregon Battle of the Books is a reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by Oregon Association of School Libraries. This year we have seventeen 4th and 5th grade students and seven 6th grade students signed up to participate. They have already started reading. With so many students signed up, we do not have enough books for everyone. Ideally we would have 6 copies of each book for the 4th and 5th graders and 4 copies of the books for the 6th graders. So we are looking for donations of books that are needed. Here is what we need: http://bit.ly/493QpA8
You can purchase books from anywhere and good quality used books are encouraged. Here is an Amazon Wishlist that can also be used to purchase books: https://bit.ly/408vyaO
Thank you for supporting these excited readers!
