Welcome Thomas Schalmo, North's New Principal!
Hello Northstar Community!
I am thrilled to be joining the outstanding team at Waukesha North High School! Driven by Excellence, Equity, and Expectations, our team will work diligently to ensure we have a successful 2022-2023 school year!
Throughout my onboarding to North, I heard from students, staff, and families who are proud to be a part of this community, as I now am as well. Students told me their teachers -- every last one of them -- will go out of their way to do anything to help them be successful.
I come to North after 13 years working on the north side of Milwaukee, most recently spending five years as the high school principal at Milwaukee Academy of Science. At MAS, we strived to meet the needs of each individual student while ensuring a safe, productive, and positive learning environment for all. That is the personal mission I bring to the work here at North.
Among my priorities are communication and presence -- I plan to be on the move visiting as many classrooms, clubs, and athletics as I can as we begin the new school year. I want to learn all that I can about what makes North special in the eyes of all our stakeholders while identifying areas where we can continually improve. I welcome feedback from all!
Thank you to all who have welcomed me so far, and I look forward to meeting so many more of you in the days and weeks to come! Let's have a fantastic school year, Northstars!
Tom Schalmo
Principal
Waukesha North High School
Welcome Carl Anderson - North's New Athletic/Activities Director & Assistant Principal (R-Z)
Greetings, Northstars.
I am happy to join the Northstar Community for the 2022-23 school year! I have felt welcomed by everyone I have met, and cannot wait to continue building relationships in the community. I am coming from North Fond du Lac as the 6-12 Athletic Director and Dean of Students, and Germantown as Dean of Students before that. I was an English teacher, hockey, soccer and lacrosse coach before becoming an administrator. I am excited to bring my excitement and energy to Athletics and Activities at North. Please introduce yourself if you see me at any events! I always enjoy meeting members of the community!
As a new Athletic Director at North, I am asking for your assistance in helping our students and athletes understand what we want to see from them. Specifically, we cheer for our team, we keep it positive and we avoid putting down or singling out players from the other team. Also, when we hear something that does not meet our expectations we need to address it in a friendly and positive manner. I want our fans to know that we want them at the games but also that they need to display good sportsmanship. This includes parents. Officials certainly do not get every call right, but they are people too and deserve to be treated with respect. Currently we are facing a statewide shortage of officials, many are leaving the profession due to verbal abuse from fans. We make an effort to be as vigilant as possible, but if we miss something please let us know so that we can help address it. We cannot control officials’ calls, weather, the other team or their fans. But we can certainly control our own behavior, attitudes and effort. Help your student understand that adversity is a part of life and the challenges they face today are helping to prepare them for success in the future.
Officials shortages have already impacted our ability to schedule events and will continue to be a challenge. If you, or anybody you know is interested in helping I would be happy to help you get started. It is a great way to give back to the game, get some exercise and make a little extra money. We are also always looking for additional help running scoreboards, announcing games and keeping the book at many of our events. These are paid positions, so please let me know if you are interested in helping fill these important roles.
Thanks for helping to make Waukesha North a great place that I already love to come to every day. I appreciate being a part of a community that cares and contributes to creating positive experiences for our students and athletes.
Respectfully,
Carl Anderson

Christina Ali, Assistant Principal (H-Q)
Hello Northstar Students and Families,
I am so excited to welcome you all to the 2022-2023 school year!
I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I’m Mrs. Christina Ali (formally Christina Kralik), one of the Assistant Principals, and am thrilled to be starting my fifth school year here at North! In my role, I oversee Social Studies, English, AVID, and standardized testing. I am also assigned to students with last names H-Q. Moreover, I co-advise both Student Council and Freshmen Ignition. It has been an absolute joy to work with all the students and families in our Waukesha North community, and I look forward to continuing to serve you all!
This year, North will continue to provide an opportunity for academic support throughout the week to ensure student success of reaching their academic goals through Just in Time Support (JIT) during their homeroom period. Students will be assigned to JIT by their teachers through Infinite Campus and attendance will be taken daily. Students will know their JIT assignments by the end of the day on Tuesdays. The homeroom schedule is as follows:
Monday
Academic and Career Planning Lessons
Tuesday
School Announcements
Grade and email checks
Review Infinite Campus for JIT schedules for rest of the week
Wednesday
Just in Time Support (JIT) or Homeroom
Thursday
Just in Time Support (JIT) or Homeroom
Friday
Just in Time Support (JIT) or Homeroom
During the first two weeks of school, students will be required to attend their assigned homeroom class. The homeroom schedule above will begin the week of September 12.
The Purpose of Just in Time Support (JIT):
JIT will be utilized for students to continue skill building based on course learning targets.
JIT gives students time to work with their teachers in a small classroom environment.
JIT provides a time for students to ask questions, receive pre-teaching or re-teaching of material, and to complete missing or make-up work.
JIT is a great time for students to collaborate with peers on projects or prepare for assessments
Feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher if you ever have questions about their grades or academic progress. We appreciate your continued support as we work to ensure that all our students are successful here at North.
Sincerely,
Christina Ali
Assistant Principal, Students H-Q
Brian Schlei, Assistant Principal (A-G)
Greetings, Northstars.
Welcome to the 2022-23 school year, I am excited to start this year in my new role as assistant principal. I thoroughly enjoyed the past nine years in the dual role of athletic director and assistant principal and I look forward to being focused on serving North in a new capacity this year. I would like to give a shout out to Carl Anderson, our new athletic director, for doing a great job of hitting the ground running. We have worked closely this summer on the transition and I will be available to support him in any way he needs.
The new role brings some changes to my responsibilities and the families I will be working with attendance, discipline and special education services. In years past I worked with last names A-D, this year that will be extended to include last names A-G. In addition I will be supervising the Physical Education, Music, Special Education and Student Services departments.
I will also continue to coordinate the school safety drills with the support of our school resource officer. As a reminder we do practice all of our safety drills in September. This can cause some stress or anxiety but it is important that both our staff and students are familiar with the protocols in the event of a real emergency. These events include fire, lockdown, lockout/hold and tornado/shelter drills.
At the district level I will be representing North on the standards based grading committee and I will be involved in work with the partnership for comprehensive literacy. This work will tie in closely to our school level work with AVID and our school improvement goals. North has done some great work in these areas and I am glad to continue to be a part of these important efforts.
Lastly, I have moved to a different office located in the main office and my assistant will be Michele Schaefgen. To schedule an appointment with me you can contact Michele at 262-970-3518. My direct phone extension has changed and is now 262-970-3513 and my email remains bschlei@waukesha.k12.wi.us.
I hope you all had a wonderful summer break!
Respectfully,
Brian Schlei
Assistant Principal (A-G)

Bus Transportation
If you require busing for your student, you must complete this form. Bus route information is uploaded in Infinite Campus for parents to view throughout the year. To request busing parents need to complete this FORM. The deadline was August 1st so please know that busing requests after that date may take a little longer to be approved. For more information on busing and the approval process, please click HERE.
All SDW bus-eligible families can access their child’s bus route information via the Infinite Campus parent portal beginning August 19, 2022.
At North, we are focused on ensuring students are in a productive learning environment from the bell signaling the start of class to the bell ending class -- in other words: bell-to-bell.
From bell-to-bell:
1) Students' cell phones should not be seen or heard. Like last school year, students may either turn their phone into their teacher's cell phone caddy at the start of class or leave their cell phone locked away in their locker.
2) In order to be able to safely identify all students, hats and hoodies may not be worn in the classroom or in hallways.
3) Students must be in their classroom on time and must remain in the classroom until dismissed by their teacher at the end of class.
Thank you for your partnership in ensuring your student is successful from bell-to-bell!
School pictures were taken August 22 & 23, 24. There will be a make-up session for any student who missed the August dates. This will be held on September 22 from 7:30am-1pm - no appointment needed. All students need to have their picture taken irregardless if you are ordering pictures or not. This picture will be used for the student’s ID and will go into the yearbook. All students need to have an ID.
Breakfast and lunch will no longer be offered free of charge for all students. The School District of Waukesha will be returning to the National School Lunch Program for the 2022-23 school year, which means students will be charged for meals if they do not have an approved application on file. Online applications will be accepted, click HERE- and select More > Meal Benefits. Hard copies of the form are also available in the Main Office.
School Supplies
Each student should come prepared on the first day of school with a writing utensil, something to write on and their iPad. Each teacher will inform their students of other items that may be needed for their classes.
Backpacks
School safety and security has become a key issue across our nation.
Therefore, all backpacks must be stored in student’s lockers during the school day. Students will not be allowed to have backpacks, cinch sacks, bins, etc. and full size purses (no larger than 7” x 10” x 2”) in classrooms and during passing times, unless they are coming to or leaving school.
We understand that there may be some student exceptions to this practice due to a variety of circumstances. A backpack exemption form is available in the office or student services.

Juniors!
Junior year is the time where students really start to dive into their future options. The counselors will meet with the Juniors during homeroom in September to discuss all that happens during Junior Year. At this meeting, juniors will be told that they will have an individual Junior Conference with a parent/guardian, and his/her counselor between October and December. These meetings are to help families understand the overall timeline of when and how to apply to colleges, options for training beyond high school, financial aid, scholarships, transcript review of credits, and any other topics the student needs to start on the path to post high school options. It is imperative that every family be watching for communication regarding these conferences, so they can reserve a time/date for their meeting. We aim for 100% attendance by all juniors!
Information for Seniors!
As the school year begins, it is a busy time for seniors who are trying to plan their path to their futures. The counselors will be sending out a large communication to all seniors and their families that cover three areas: 2 & 4 year colleges, Technical Colleges & Apprenticeships, and Military, Employment, Undecided. Seniors will also have the opportunity to sign up for individual meetings with their counselor if they need further assistance. Here is an overall timeline guide for those planning to apply to college: Click HERE
Wisconsin Education Fairs
The Wisconsin Education Fair organization will continue to be a post-secondary planning resource for our students and families.
Here are the dates for the upcoming college fairs that we want to encourage seniors and juniors to attend. Seniors who are undecided about their future should attend, and all juniors should be attending in order to prepare for their upcoming Junior Conference with their counselor.
Upcoming dates are listed below. Here is the link to see a full schedule: Wisconsin Education Fair

Library Catalog - Destiny Information
Did you know that you have the ability to search, hold and read books in our district libraries from anywhere, on any of your devices? Just have students use the app on their iPads called "Follett Destiny'' (the one with a tree) that takes them directly to the traditional catalog. Or the newer look is the Destiny Discover app (see image below). Both apps will accomplish the same task- just a different look. Click on "Catalog" to search for a book or another resource. If you would like to place a hold on a book, or read an electronic copy of the book, or to view your own account, you just need to be logged in first. You will see “Log in'' in the upper-right hand side of your screen. Use the same username and password that you use for your other accounts in the district. Username is a first part (before @) of your student’s SDW email account (first initial+last name+###@stu.waukesha.k12.wi.us). Password is lunch code+safe word.
Find some New Titles and place them on hold. We will deliver it to your English class.
