AHS Featured Club: Student Council
AHS Student Council started the school year with elections of officers, leading homecoming activities, and making "Boo Bags" purchased by APS students' family or friends for Halloween treat bags.
This high school club is designed to represent the student body through student leaders who "provide enrichment opportunities in the school and community and contribute to a state partnership as well," said AHS Student Council Advisor Amber Severson.
In addition, members attend the State Student Council Conference held annually in Bismarck where they receive the opportunity to collaborate with student council members from other schools around North Dakota.
"They work with other student leaders from around the state to brainstorm ideas on advocacy, engagement, leadership, and educational improvement, said Severson.
From a student perspective, Junior, Jaelyn Modine stated, “State Student council is fun and exciting. It occurs during December, and you get to miss school.”
Student Council is all about the students and the environment around them. The group will continue to host other events throughout the school year and promote advocacy events important to the school culture.
Promoting Positive Habits
On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, the Alexander Middle School hosted its first quarterly "Comet Cash Auction" to promote positive responsibility and leadership actions displayed by students over the past month.
5-8th grade students received a check register to keep track of any Comet Cash received as a way on initiating money management, too.
Some of the prizes included sweatshirts, journals and there was a bake sale at the auction, which went as prizes also. The next auction will be held before the Christmas Break.

With only its second year as a 9-man football team, the Alexander Comet’s football program is ending with a successful season for its teams. The community currently has 1st-2nd grade flag football and 3rd-4th grade flag football through the Williston Parks and Recreation program. 4-6th grade tackle football, junior high football and varsity football teams represent the school with 9-man programs.
With no seniors on the varsity team this year, the group has the potential to stay together and come back next year for an even greater teamwork. When reflecting on teamwork, junior Keaton Wehrman said, “We had better determination and attitude and a better offensive line.” The team still has a lot of skills to develop and hope to come back stronger and next year better.
Middle school football ended positively with 5 wins, 3 losses, and the final game win over Berthold. With a small team, the strength was in their ability to work together.
Elementary football coach Chad Simonson and his team has had an outstanding season this year. Coach Chad wants the kids to get the fundamentals and be ready for junior high football when they get there. The kids' season went very well and only lost two games. Coach said, "The kids did good because they hate losing and are very competitive." Simonson hopes to come back next year and work on greater skills with many of the same kids to pick up where he left off this year.
The varsity football team ended the last game of the season on Friday October 7th with a 46 to 10 win over TGU. The other two wins of the season both occurred against Berthold with one winning score of 18-16 and the other game ended with the Comets winning 14-8. Amy Gaida, varsity Comet football coach said, “The highs of the season were a lot of improvement in certain areas and the lows were the injuries but that just comes with playing the game.”
