Dear Community Families,
What an honor it was to have Mr. Jose-Luis Orozco to perform at our Hispanic Heritage Assembly on Friday. I hope you and your student enjoyed the 30 minutes of songs and movements. Cheers to your support of our Pledge Drive which funds our Multicultural Assemblies!
Speaking of Pledge Drive, results are in to wrap up our 6 weeks of Pledge Drive Incentives. MANY THANKS to the 264 Families participating (58.4% participation) with $171,042 pledged -- a record high participation during the first 6 weeks of school compared to previous 5 years. Our work is not done! We still have $153,958 to raise to be able to fund everything next year!
There's a lot going on behind the scenes with the Book Fair Committee, Spirit Store and Distribution Day - Spooktacular Halloween Car Parade this month! Before you know it, November will be here! And Readathon Committee is also hard at work to bring this year's theme to life!
Love to hear any feedback you have regarding the newsletter!
Until next time ... stay safe and healthy!
Sincerely,
Stefania Willens
CFF President
Indigenous Peoples' Day
At Community Magnet Charter we acknowledge that our campus is located on the traditional territory and homelands of the Tongva tribe (also known as the Gabrieleno Tongva or the Kizh [pronounced Keech]). The Tongva defined their world as Tovaangar, the land of the Los Angeles Basin and the Southern Channel Islands for thousands of years. Tongvaar supported about 5,000 people in nearly 100 villages, including the nearby village Kuruvangna, on what is now University High School in West Los Angeles! In fact, there is still a spring there that is maintained by the Gabrieliño/Tongva Springs Foundation. In 1994, the state of California recognized the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe, but the tribe continues to fight for Federal recognition. Learn more about the Kizh Nation (Gabrieleno Band of Mission Indians)! Learn more about Tonvaangar with this interactive map.

Spooktacular DECORATIONS NEEDED
Spooktacular Car Parade Decoration Donations/Loans Needed
OCTOBER 29 & 30th at our October Distribution, CMCS is planning a Spooktacular Halloween car parade on the upper yard for our October distribution day with a sweet treat for our students! But we need supplies and we need them soon (especially large items)!
GRADE LEVEL DONATION LIST:
- Kindergarten and 1st Grade - spider webs and pumpkins, all kinds of pumpkins-plastic, paper, and real. The bigger the better!
- 2nd grade and 3rd grade - scarecrows, crows, black cats, and bats
- 4th grade and 5th grade - tombstones and witches (hats, brooms, witches legs)
*This is our suggestion list and we hope everyone is able to contribute, and if you have additional items you would like to donate please be our guest.
WHEN CAN I DROP OFF DECORATIONS? The sooner the better! But between NOW and OCTOBER 23rd (at the latest) and during the hours of 9 AM - 2 PM! If you are donating something you want returned, please label your name very clearly on the item.
WHERE CAN I DROP THEM? Items can be dropped at Community or if you live in the valley and can not get up to Community to donate, please reach out to Elizabeth Jaspan via FreshSchools. You can drop them off at her house and she will take them up for you!
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU NEED? If you have a connection to a prop house or you own large decorations, then we would love to have your help. We need large items!
We also need hay bales, scarecrows, pumpkins (plastic, paper, real), spiders (larger is better), bats, tombstones, old white sheets, and white tablecloths (plastic is great).
*Please no items that require electricity! CMCS is in a fire hazard zone and we want to ensure the safety of all involved. Families will be expected to stay in their car at all times. Please do not bring anything else/other treats to distribute as only items from the school will be distributed at the event.
A NOTE REGARDING DIA DE LOS MUERTOS: Edith has also offered to set up A Dia de Muerto altar and we could use a few parents to help her with decorations and set up. If you would like to send in photographs (photocopies please) to honor and celebrate those dear to us who have passed away, we can place them around the altar.
Let's pull together and make this a fun event for our children!

Box Tops!
Even though Box Tops has gone digital, there are still some products out there that have unexpired traditional clips. If you see the traditional clip on the box, you can still get credit for those as long as they are not expired!
We know getting traditional Box Tops to school this year might be challenging for families. Your safety is important to us, that's why Box Tops is allowing families to send in their box tops directly! Watch the simple how-to video below for further instructions.
All Box Tops submissions must be postmarked by NOVEMBER 2 to be included in your school's next check. Only unexpired clips will be accepted. All submissions received by the deadline can take up to 3 weeks to process from that November 2 deadline.
Still not connected to the new digital system? Its easy to get started! Visit https://www.boxtops4education.com/ to learn how your purchases can be adding up for Community Magnet School!
