With the uncertainty regarding how "school will look" as we continue through the COVID pandemic, it is more important than ever to take care of signing the computer permission forms! First of all, let me congratulate each of you on the amazing and wonderful accomplishment you each have achieved. You have earned your high school diploma and graduated from your respective high schools as a college junior. I know it has been a difficult road at times, but you stayed the course and finished the race. You will now move forward as a Roane State alum with your associates degree to your university. Before you go, we are hoping you will be able to participate with one more thing – Graduation.

The college has announced that plans are being made to hold our graduation ceremonies Saturday, July 25. Roane State will be sending an email out this coming Tuesday, May 26 on this development. The specific details are being, and will continue to be, worked out as we determine the number of students who wish to attend and the number of guest allowed according to CDC and TBR guidelines.

For Middle College graduates, we will participate as a group in the 2:00 service. If this arrangement should change, we will adjust accordingly as a group. Please keep this in mind as you submit if you plan to participate in the ceremony.

No one expected March 13th to be our last day. Many accounts in our cafeteria were left with outstanding balances. In order to "Make A Payment" to zero out an account for the year, we have made an easy to follow, step by step screencast.

Payments can be brought to the school in check or cash during lunch distribution (11-1) each day to give to our cafeteria manager. Payments are NOT accepted by ORHS but through Aramark, our lunch provider.

Seniors' artwork will be available for pickup on Tuesday, May 26th in the art garden in the front of the school. After seniors drop their laptops, come to the front of the building to collect your masterpieces! Everything is tagged in large garbage sacks for safety!

Parents, student lockers were cleaned out by our staff two weeks ago. Items have been "bagged and tagged" and can be picked up the week laptops are returned. Should your student need the items prior to that time, please contact the Main Office at 425-9601.

On March 10, ORHS French students had the opportunity to test their abilities against other French students from across the United States. The results are in, and the students of Mesdames Bailey and Barry performed very well, both within the State of Tennessee and in the United States!

Congratulations 🎉🎈 to Brady Hutson, who received a mechanics tool set from Top Wrench. He scored 2nd overall in his automotive class and certified on all 10 ASE test areas! Mr. LaDue says he was a great help in the shop, often helping students and answering questions as needed.

The Youth Advisory Board is accepting applications for the next school year. The term of office begins on August 1st, 2020. Participation on the City of Oak Ridge YAB requires attendance at bi-monthly meetings on Wednesday afternoon right after school and also at special events throughout the year. All interested students are encouraged to fill out the online application located at www.oakridgetn.gov or you may call the Front Desk of the Civic Center at 865-425-3450 to obtain a paper copy. Application requirements include being an Oak Ridge resident and a student that is entering 8th-12th grade. Applications will be due by June 15, 2020 to the City Clerk’s Office. Get your cow bells, horns, balloons, streamer, decorate your cars and be ready to drive down Providence Road from the pool to the stop sign to celebrate our seniors in a celebratory drive by! The event begins on May 26th at 3:10 pm sharp. Hosted in partnership between Senior Steering, Matt Reedy & OR Parks & Recs and approved by the ORPD! After laptops, textbooks, athletic gear, etc. have been collected, our staff will work to determine if seniors owe any money. Thank you to everyone who has reached out; however, we are unable to determine this amount until items are returned to us.

Oak Ridge High School will not be requiring students to complete a traditional summer reading assignment for the upcoming summer break. We feel under the present conditions the task would be too burdensome and the logistics too difficult to overcome. Instead, this year, we are posting to the school’s website a list of recommended readings for students in order to provide options for continued learning and to mitigate potential losses in reading skills over the summer. The list includes selected works from different disciplines and departments at the high school for students who might be interested in science, math, technology, history, social science, and classic literature. There is a mix of all nonfiction and fiction genres, and the selections range from high-interest contemporary works to traditional, canonical texts. Although we have made every effort to consider content and subject matter in order to avoid sensitive topics, controversial issues, or mature subject matter, parents or guardians are ultimately the best judges of what is suitable for their students. Therefore, we strongly suggest that parents or guardians evaluate each selected text to determine whether a work is appropriate for their students. The list also identifies if and where a text may be available online in a free eBook or audiobook format.
