¡Sí se Puede! Yes, you Can!
Supports for the Secondary ESL teacher
The first Step is to know your students!
Your LPAC rep will be able to tell you the PLDs or Proficiency Level Descriptors of your students. Eduphoria has them listed as LEP in the students tab. If they have been in LISD before, you will have TELPAS scores to look at under the scores tab at the very bottom.
Key terms:
Beginner = little to no English, only high frequency words, silent period
Intermediate = limited, present tense, gets the gist, simple sentences with HFW
Advanced= on grade level with language supports, some struggle w/ pronouns and prepositions
Advanced High= comparable to peers, needs support with idioms
Help! My student does not speak English!
Newcomer students will often have a "silent period". They will need a safe environment to begin to use single words or phrases. A buddy can be helpful, but do not rely on translators for everything or the student will depend upon them too much. COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT is the most important piece: visuals, hands-on, multiple exposures. Focus on the skills and content, the language will come with supports in time. Illustrated word walls and sentence stems are very helpful for writing development! Allow labeling & drawing. Provide scaffolded notes like cloze note outlines instead of taking notes. Simplify vocabulary for small reading tasks. Flow charts help reinforce steps that have been modeled. NewsELA and other leveled reading assignments help adjust reading levels for content. For clarification the app SayHi can be used sparingly, but setting the language for the right country and enunciation are essential. khanacademy.org can also be helpful with multi-lingual videos especially in math and sciences.
I want to give my students the very best. What else can I do?
Sheltered Instruction is a highly research based comprehensible list of the best practices essential for the progress of English Learners. These strategies are highly beneficial to all students, because after all, we are all still learning academic vocabulary! Trainings are coming throughout the year.
