Message from the Superintendent: February 26, 2024
Dear PYLUSD Community,
While I don’t remember too much from my middle school years, the one memory forever etched in stone is when I traveled with my 6th-grade class to Big Bear for Outdoor Science School (OSS). Larry was my counselor, and he engaged us with his personality and love for the outdoors. That week away from home, in the mountains for the first time, forever changed me for the better. When we left, Larry gave each one of us a hand-painted piece of bark that I still have many years later.
When I arrived here in PYL, one of the things I noticed was that not all of our schools provided students the opportunity to attend OSS. We changed this immediately and, this year, every one of our elementary schools is attending OSS!
Now, all of our 5th/6th-grade PYL students have the opportunity to experience Outdoor Science School. This is just one example of the many ways we are Putting Kids First here in PYL!
It is an honor to serve as your superintendent of schools.
Respectfully,
Dr. Alex Cherniss

A Message from 2024 Board President Leandra Blades
Hello PYLUSD Students, Staff, Parents, and Community Members,
I would like to take this opportunity to highlight a few recent developments in our school district.
First, the strides we have made this year when it comes to our targeted intervention efforts to ensure every student reaches their full potential in the area of math. At both the elementary and secondary levels, our dedicated staff members are going above and beyond to provide before, during, and after-school support to students who may need extra assistance to meet grade-level standards.
For our youngest learners, our elementary school interventions include small group instruction during the school day and after-school programs focused on foundational math skills. Through collaborative efforts with our Expanded Learning Department, we've extended academic support to students in after-school childcare programs, utilizing various resources to reinforce key concepts. Similarly, at the middle and high school levels, we've tailored interventions to address students’ specific needs, offering small group instruction and homework assistance.
Rest assured that the efforts outlined above only represent a portion of the strategies we’ve implemented to support student success. Our commitment to targeted intervention is yielding real results with thousands of PYLUSD students benefiting from these services. The feedback from students, parents, and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive, underscoring the importance of these initiatives on student success.
Next, I want to congratulate Deputy Superintendent Dr. Issaic Gates on his recent promotion. I am proud of your achievements and am grateful for your leadership in our district.
I would also like to highlight the Orange County School of Computer Science at Bernardo Yorba. Our enrollment numbers continue to climb, which is not only great news for our district but also great news for our teachers. Soon positions will be opening due to the growth of the school which will create new opportunities. I would also like to thank the current Bernardo Yorba teachers and staff. Your commitment to our students and our mission to give high-quality education is commendable.
Finally, I cannot contain my excitement about our new Independent Study Universal Sports Institute (USI). This new program will serve specialized student-athletes in grades 3-12, who choose to train while concurrently partaking in independent study programs through either the district’s home school program at Parkview School or online school at Buena Vista Virtual Academy.
The Universal Sports Institute will open many doors for our student-athletes and give opportunities to students and families who seek to take their athletic abilities to the next level. As plans for the institute continue to progress, I am in awe of what will be offered to our student-athletes. We will be sure to share more about this new program in the weeks to come.
In closing, and on behalf of the Board of Education, thank you all for your ongoing dedication and support as we continue to strive to offer our students the advantage of an outstanding education.
Sincerely,
Leandra Blades
