A Message From Heather Patterson, GRHS Principal
Happy Sunday GRHS Longhorns,
This week was FULL of GR-eatness! We TEAMED up for the kindness week challenge, sports comeback stories, maroon track magic with band, LIVE broadcasts from the Ranch with Mr. T and team, and so much more! Teamwork def made the dream work this week!
As I said last week, Friday was the mid way point for this 4th six weeks, so progress reports will come home this week! I strongly encourage you to check out your phone "time" usage if your grades are not where they should be. As I mentioned on the morning announcements, we are about to try a "Tech Detox" day...and from the MANY lunch convos I had with students on Friday....you were already feeling anxious about even temporarily putting your technology away. It will give us a time to reconnect, and go old school by actually talking to each other! (I will let you know when this happens, so you can prepared yourself!) I feel that the "grace" during COVID that was given, especially when we were virtual, has created a major dependence on personal technology devices, and the way you are using it, by trying to say you can "multi-task."
Starting TOMORROW, if your phone or airpods/headphones are VISIBLE DURING CLASS TIME, and there is NOTHING designated on the teacher's lesson plan for you to be using it for an assignment, you will be asked ONCE to put it away, after that it will result in a write up, which will effect your exemptions. Believe me...I already know this will NOT be popular, but this is a major distraction to your learning, as you may think you are ABLE to multi-task, but we are seeing differently as we conduct walkthroughs during the classrooms and seeing progress. My job, is sometimes unpopular, when I have to make decisions that I feel are hindering either the learning or safety for you at school, but it is one I am responsible for handling as a campus leader. All teachers have the RED/GREEN MLD signs posted in their classrooms, and have all year, so please ensure you are being RESPECTFUL and following this rule that has been in place all year. I have reattached it below. (*Sidenote - all the hoodies must be down DURING class as you have become masters at hiding those air-pods, too.)
*Perk...if you are WEARING YOUR LANYARD/ID you ARE able to use your devices before school until 8:15, during your designated lunch and advisory, and starting at 3:40 when the bell rings. Plenty of time to keep up with your "stories and streaks" ;) There are are a few more tweaks that will be coming, but for now, this is my expectation and I need us (students/teachers/parents) to work as ONE TEAM, and be on the same page, to create the optimal learning environment for our Longhorns!
Attendance (Medical) Note Reminders!
Attendance does count! Please remember to turn in your Medical Excuses within 5 school days for your return. (if you have not turned in Medical Notes up to this point for this semester, you have until the END OF THIS WEEK (Feb 4th) to do so and have them COUNT towards exemptions. *You cannot wait until the end of the year and exemption time to do this. Thanks!
- Directly from 21-22 Secondary Student Handbook- “When a student is absent from school due to personal illness, the student upon return, or within 5 days of returning to school, must submit a note signed by a parent giving the date(s) and describing the reason for the absence. Parent notes may be sent by email but must come from a parent’s verified email account. The note or email must be sent to the campus attendance clerk.”
Course Selection and Counselor Schedules:
22-23 Course Selection is in FULL swing, which means our counselors are out of their offices MOST of the day starting February 7th servicing our 2650+ students (including being at RJH to meet one on one with our incoming freshman). This is a lengthy process because they meet one-on-one with EVERY student to ensure they are set up for success (and graduation) here at GRHS.
Please don't get frustrated if you get an out of office response from their email that says they will be getting back with you within 24-48 business hours, because in the interim their awesome Admin Assistant - Mrs. Ware, will be happy to assist you/your child. Her contact info is here, nware@lcisd.org and will also be linked in the counselors "out of office reply" for easy access for you. Your Longhorn is important to our GR counselors, so they will be getting back with you within 48 business hours, unless it is a safety concern, which will be priority, and handled immediately, of course.
REMINDERS:
Tardies are alive and well, so please make sure you are following the bell schedule that has been posted since day one. Teachers are now turning in names of students that DO NOT return back from lunch on time, so please make sure you are not creating a bad habit that will effect your exemptions. See the tardy consequences below! Detention, ISS, and Saturday clock hours are in full effect!
If you do not have an ID at this point, (because you have lost BOTH of them that we gifted you) you will need to purchase a new one for $5 in the library from 8:00-8:15am.
If you choose not to, there will be a HOLD placed on your account for the end of year. (exemptions/graduation/final grades, etc)
- REMEMBER: NO ID ON = No Phone/Airpods/Headphones during DESIGNATED TIMES! ID's are mandatory everyday! No more temporaries will be issued. If you need a NEW ID/Lanyard- can be purchased for $5 in the library from 8:00-8:15 daily! Lanyards/ID's should be on the second you step through the doors each day. Please make sure you are following this rule as well as being in dress code and to ensure that you are not written up for non compliance.
The front office is open daily Monday- Friday 8:00-4:00pm to assist you. You can also directly email us or call 832-223-4200 during the same hours. We are happy to help!
