GAMMO - GAMING MODENA
A GAMING EXPERIENCE TO EXPLORE MODENA AND ITS TRADITIONS
The context - What we know about the tourists visiting Modena
- We know that tourists stop in Modena for few days (2-3 days), being on the way from Milan to Florence and Rome
- in recent years Modena became more and more famous for some global well-known products:
- local food (according to Forbes, in Emilia-Romagna region it is possible to taste the best food in the world)
- cars (ie. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati etc.)
- classical music/opera (Pavarotti)
- the UNESCO heritage monuments
- In the last years, tourists in the city grew exponentially and they have come from all over the world, willing to visit the inner and less touristic aspects of the city
- Often, when tourists arrive in Modena, they already know many aspects of Modena because they are passionate of food for instance and so they made researches about that or reserved a table at the Osteria Francescana (the 2nd world’s best restaurant); often they had watched TV series about Modena or other programmes that make them feel “experts” of Modena.
The aim of GAMMO
For all these reasons, the main aim of the GAMMO game is to guide the visitor in a special experience, that s/he would not be able to make by watching TV programmes or visiting the city in a traditional way, guided by tourist books, or following city posts and tourist signs, following a guided tour or downloading and reading the history and traditions of Modena from institutional websites.
GAMMO added value
The Modena experience is the added value of GAMMO which can bring you to live a few unforgettable days experiencing talks with local people, local traditional food, local heritage, motors and music.
Specifically, key actions will be:
> the interaction with the local inhabitants and their stories: local farmers, traders, old inhabitants are the true heritage of the city, since they are the custodians of the ancient traditions and folk tales about the city
> the exploration of some special places in Modena that are outside the main touristic routes but that are very significant and relevant to the city
> the challenges to be faced and the reward that is always strictly connected to the discovery of Modena
GAMMO Structure
GAMMO will be played in all the city centre, visiting the most inner and significant places for the local tradition and culture.
LEVEL 1 – IF YOU KNOW MODENA, YOU WILL SAVE IT!
[The player starts to play the game through a special online App: s/he registers and a video with this information is displayed]
Modena is collapsing under water! Historically, Modena was like a little Venice, with many rivers in the city centre that were used as sailing channels for the transport of food and various materials. In the '60s, the rivers were covered but they still exist underground and now the whole city centre is collapsing. The tourist HERO can save Modena, if (s)he discovers its real values and traditions. Only people not living in the city can save Modena!
It is a very difficult challenge and the hero doesn't feel prepared, since (s)he doesn't know Modena... why me?
The answer to the question is displayed: YOU because you are not from Modena, only visitors/tourists not living in the city can rescue Modena.
Please, go and meet Mr. Gino now, the photographer has been taking photos of Modena for over 50 years.
[the video gives the instructions to reach Gino the photographer, that is a real and existing person. The player is asked to go there]
As the player meets Gino, he says: "You can save Modena if you experience and taste its local products, places and traditions. You can be a hero if you rescue Modena and in the end you will gain exclusive tastes and access to special experiences”.
