BELONG ~ BELIEVE ~ ACHIEVE
Hello, Wildcat Families and Students!
It is hard to believe our first full week of the 23-24 school year is complete!
I would like to introduce our new Sullivan Wildcat Teachers! These amazing teachers come with the knowledge and experience specifically dedicated to middle school students. Please help me welcome our new teachers!
Vanessa Sanchez - 6th and 7th Grade Science Teacher
Megan Grippo - PE Teacher
Sierra Arteaga - 8th grade Math teacher
Lizet Lopez - 6th and 7th grade Math Teacher
Alyssa Juarez - Education Specialist for Middle and High School.
- Thank you to our PTO for breakfast this past Friday for our staff!
- Thank you parents for the smoothest and easiest drop-off and pick-ups to the start of past school years!
- As always thank you to our parents and community partners for helping to support our students and staff in making the start of this year amazing!
SPORTS:
SMS has a new Athletic Clearance Site!
https://www.homecampus.com/login
Directions and other Sports forms are on the SMS Website. If your student is interested in playing sports for SMS this year, your student will need a Sports Physical. Sports physicals are only valid for one calendar year. When my kiddos played sports, I got their sports physicals done during June, July or August so that they were able to play multiple sports during the year.
Check out the SMS Website for all the forms you will need - including volunteer and driving forms that must be completed annually as well. We always need drivers as we don't have transportation for MS sporting events.
Thanks for helping us support well-rounded students and student-athletes!

This week:
- Students are finishing up their diagnostic writing sample in Language Arts. We use this writing sample to create a baseline, or starting point, for each student.
- Students completed the STAR testing in math this week.
- Students will complete the STAR testing in Language Arts next week.
- STAR testing is a comprehensive assessment that provides insights needed to help guide literacy growth and increase math mastery with actionable insight into each student’s math skills and subskills.
Sullivan Middle School's commitment to our parents and community is to have our Wildcats feel safe and happy! We surveyed our students about the first day and week. All of 8th grade and half of 7th grade will have second lunch and follow Bell Schedule B.
SPORTS
CROSS COUNTRY: COACH PIPE
A meeting will be held the first week of school for all interested runners. Please feel free to email me at ennis.pipe@bonsallusd.com.
Participating in sports provides an important connection to the school, plays a key role in student development, and should be a positive experience. My focus is two-fold. First, participants are student-athletes with a focus on the student/academic aspect and second, it is incumbent on a coach to create a positive environment for the student so their experience is enjoyable, regardless of ability.
GENERAL INFORMATION
* We will have practice Monday-Friday. Monday-Thursday is after school, Friday will be an early morning before school practice 6:15-7:30 am. Runners should change into their running gear before practice and are expected to be on time for an adequate warm-up to prevent injuries.
* Runners should have a light breakfast prior to Friday practices. Students will be able to change after practice and a more filling breakfast should be sent with them. Hydration is critical and runners should carry a water bottle with them to drink/fill during the day to maintain hydration.
*Practice outlines will be provided to runners. We will have days with a sole focus on running but also incorporate stretching, rolling strength training, and plyometric exercises for speed and strength.
*There will be approximately 6 meets that will take place during the season. Once finalized,
times and dates will be communicated.
**Athletic forms and physicals MUST be completed and submitted through the website prior to participating so please plan accordingly. Students who are not cleared through the Athletic Department will not be allowed to participate.
All students must maintain a 2.0 GPA with no more than one F grade to participate.
FLAG FOOTBALL: COACH CASILLAS
GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL: COACH GRESBRINK AND COACH GRIPPO
Girls' Volleyball Tryouts:
We will be splitting the tryouts this year by students' designated lunch periods because of the overwhelming interest we had at our lunch meeting this week.
- On Monday, August 28th from 3:00 - 4:30 pm ONLY students that have first lunch Monday thru Thursday will be permitted to try out.
- On Tuesday, August 29th from 3:00 - 4:30 pm ONLY students that have second lunch Monday thru Thursday will be permitted to try out.
Wednesday after school a list will be posted on the MPR doors listing the students that will be invited back for our second round of tryouts on Thursday after school from 3:00 - 4:30. With a possible final round on Friday.
We are very excited that so many students want to be a part of the volleyball team, however, we can only take so many students on the JV and V teams. Students who don't make it will be able to still join cross country team with Coach Pipe.
New this year: ALL TRYOUT DAYS WILL BE CLOSED FOR PARENTS. Thank you for understanding.
Students will NOT need to be cleared to tryout. We do have a new Athletic Clearance Site that we will use this year. Please go to: https://www.homecampus.com/login to register your student once they make the team. They will have until 9/14 to get cleared before we give their spot to someone else. Physicals expire after one calendar year so if your student needs one please schedule that now! The form your doctor has or the one from the clearance site will work. Please note that the clearance site states your student must be in good academic and behavioral standing in order to participate.
Our first scheduled games are on Tuesday 9/19 at Sullivan!!
We are excited for the season,
Coach Gresbrink and Coach Grippo
p.s. The Schedule and directions about the Athletic Clearance Site are on the Sullivan Website under Athletics!

SECURED CAMPUS AND ENTRANCE INFORMATION
ATTENTION PARENTS!
We are excited to announce that we extended our safety and security for all staff and students by installing a fence around the front of our school! Visitors will be required to bring ID and check in at the Welcome Booth before anyone is permitted on campus.
Only emergency vehicles, buses, those with handicap placards, and those with other special placards have access to the upper lot, emergency lane closest to the front of our schools. You will need to show your placard to Campus Security.
This decision to enforce our existing parking lot plan aligns with the recommendations of our community safety partners and will increase our ability to maintain a safe and secure site:
- When dropping students off, please use the lower levels of the parking lot.
- When visiting either the middle or the high school office, please park in the lower levels, bring your ID to the Welcome booth, and check in with the appropriate staff.
We appreciate your partnership and support in our efforts to provide the highest levels of safety for our students
