February is also American Heart month! Students will be taste-testing beets and learning about the importance of heart-healthy foods.
Buckley
In Farm to School, the 2nd graders made bean buddy bags and will be observing their beans sprout over the next few weeks (see photo). They enjoyed a bean and corn salsa. The 3rd and 4th graders learned about how seeds travel and enjoyed a seed snack mix.
For nutrition lessons, 1st grade learned how to eat a rainbow and the importance of different colored fruits and vegetables for our bodies. They tried a rainbow fruit salad. The 3rd and 5th graders learned about food processing and whole grains. They made a delicious tasting of veggie fried rice. Click the photo for recipes.

Courtade
We had a busy month at Courtade! We started off lessons with 1st grade learning about the importance of soil and where our food comes from, they enjoyed bean and corn salsa. In 2nd and 3rd grade, students learned about how seeds travel and enjoyed a seed snack mix. In 4th and 5th grade, students learned about the different layers of soil and observed how the layers separate with a soil shake activity. The 4th and 5th graders also helped to prepare bean and corn salsa.
Courtade Math Night was a huge success! We engaged students with a fruit/veggie counting and memory game. We also served salsa veggie wraps (click the photo for a link to the recipe).
