School Improvement Day
AM and PM EC/WELE students will rotate which session will attend throughout the year. On September 1st, our AM students will attend. There will be no school for our PM students on this day. On our next SIP day, September 29th, our PM students will attend and they will attend in the morning session. AM students will not attend school on that day.
If you're wondering what these SIP days are, these days are crucial to our professional staff development. As educators, we need to continue to grow and learn about new teaching strategies, collaborate on best practices, and more.
MAP Assessment
During September, your kindergarten student will complete the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) on the computer. All students in grades K-8 will participate in this assessment. Our goal in utilizing this assessment in kindergarten is to expose our students to the assessment, familiarize them with using a Chromebook to take the assessment and provide them with a positive experience for their first standardized assessment. Once complete we will review the results as this assessment provides us with valid information about what our students know and can do, and what they are ready to learn next. We will encourage our students to do their best and there will be support during the assessment to ensure that students understand how to take the assessment. We will be starting the process with a practice test and then on subsequent days, your child will take a literacy assessment and a math assessment.
MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your childās level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. With MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child.
In late October, we will send you a detailed report from MAP on your childās performance. We will also provide you with resources to understand the report. The MAP results are just one piece of baseline data that we use to better instruction for your child. We also use observations from our KIDS assessment which were in my newsletter last week.
We ask that as a parent you support your child by keeping the focus on learning and that assessments are done to help us understand what information they know and how we can help them grow. This is our fifth year of using the MAP assessment and we found that students enjoyed the experience.

International Dot Day-September 15th!
Dot Day is centered around the picture book, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to "make her mark". What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the world.
We have a variety of creative ways to celebrate this day with our students learn more about the book, visit the link HERE. We can't wait to celebrate this story with art and more!
