SHES Weekly Update

We had another great week at Shadow Hills! The teaching and learning that I saw in classrooms this week was outstanding! Our first and second graders made me proud by working independently while their teachers worked with small reading groups. I also saw students thinking deeply about math and explaining their thinking to their peers in BOTH languages. All students were engaged and enjoying their learning.

As a PBIS district, we are continuing to remind our students to be safe, respectful, and responsible. Thank you for working with us to ensure that our students are good citizens.

If you are able, we need candy donations for the Fall Festival and volunteers before and after school to sell tickets the weeks before the Fall Festival. Please see the message below from our PTA.

Mrs. Edwards has joined the Shadow Hills team as our new Office Clerk. Mrs. Edwards lives in Alpine, and she has a son at Creekside in the Dual Language program! Thank you for joining us and believing in our program as much as we do! Please stop by the office and welcome Mrs. Edwards to the team!

As we have shared previously, we have recently incorporated a digital program called i-Ready into our district-wide curriculum. This program is being used in grades kindergarten through eighth grade and encompasses both assessment and skills practice in reading and math. AUSD will be hosting an i-Ready Parent Evening on Monday, October 4th from 6:00-7:00 pm via Zoom. The first 30 minutes will be a presentation explaining how to interpret the results and the final 30 minutes will be an opportunity for you to ask questions. We hope that you can attend this very important evening.

We are excited to be able to welcome volunteers back onto our campuses beginning Monday, October 4. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has classified “volunteers who are on-site at a school campus” as “workers” and requires volunteers to follow the same health and safety guidelines as our staff. Therefore, volunteers must either show proof of COVID vaccination or show a negative COVID test from the previous seven days before volunteering. Masks will also be required. Please know that we will be offering free COVID testing each week at JMMS. More information can always be found on our website and social media.

We are excited to announce that our students will start receiving science, coding, gardening, aquaponics, and music lessons through Alpine Education Foundation once per week. Pictures to come!

COVID testing will be held at Joan MacQueen Middle School twice a week. Wednesday's testing will be in the JMMS staff parking lot from 7:30am - 12pm. Saturday's testing will be in the JMMS Gym from 8am - 12pm. Testing is open to staff, students, and the community. Please pre-register at https://www.covxlabs.com/prereg-form.

Three weeks until our annual Fall Festival! It's getting closer, and we are so excited!

The Fall Festival planning committee will not be having a meeting this Wednesday, 10/06/21. However, an email will be sent out Wednesday, 10/06/21, to all Fall Festival parent representatives and teachers to provide updates.

Please continue to send candy into your classrooms for the Fall Festival, as well as donations for class-specific baskets and night of sign-up sheets. Please reach out to your child's teacher for further information.

We are welcoming any middle school, high school, community members to sign up as volunteers for the night of to help with set up, work the event and clean up. Volunteering at the Fall Festival is an excellent opportunity if hours are needed or they want to be involved. Please reach out to Sara Castorena for more information about this.

We need volunteers selling pre-sale tickets at JMMS, CELC, and SHES. If you are available to volunteer a half-hour of your time, we would greatly appreciate it. You will have a PTA board member present with you. Please click on this link to sign up.

If you are a business or know of a company that would like to donate and advertise their business at the festival, please reach out. The company will also be included in the yearbook "Thank You to Sponsors" page that goes out to the campus at the end of the year.

Please drop off all silent auctions items and donations at the PTA room (room 3) or drop them off in the office with an indication of "Attn: PTA."

We have an upcoming PTA meeting on October 6th at 6 PM at the Shadow Hills lunch tables. All members of the PTA are invited to participate and hear about our upcoming events. In addition, we will be discussing our 2021-2022 PTA budget. This meeting is the time to have a voice in some of the fun events and things PTA brings to life throughout the year.
