YA Diverse Books Book Club Reads The Words in My Hands by Asphyxia
The Words in My Hands by Asphyxia was a summer read for the YA Diverse Books Book Club and we just met on Tuesday during ARE time to discuss this powerful book about a Deaf Australian teenager who in a slightly futuristic society in Melbourne goes against the government's prescribed dietary plan of boxed prepared foods to be part of the wild food movement and grow her own garden. Asphyxia, the author and illustrator of this beautiful book is a Deaf activist. For our meeting each member created their own page inspired by Piper's journal with words they chose to describe the book. Some of the words students chose were, "dystopian, emotional, riveting, haunting and scarily realistic." Stop by to see the banner made with their journal pages.
The Next YA Diverse Books Book Club is Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo
Please stop by the library to pick up your copy of Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. The Young Adult Diverse Books Book Club read Acevedo's first book The Poet X a few years ago and loved the novel in verse. The publisher's note for Clap When You Land states, "In a novel-in-verse that brims with grief and love, National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness, and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives."
We'll meet on Tuesday, October 17 at 11:00am to discuss Clap When You Land.
Faculty/Staff Book Club Met to discuss Lessons in Chemistry
It was unanimous, everyone loved Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus! It's a great book and we had a great conversation with great colleagues and friends! We enjoyed Elizabeth Zott's brownies! The recipe is in the photos below.
The Next Faculty/Staff Book Club Book is The Art Thief by Michael Finkel
The Art Thief: A True Story of Love, Crime and a Dangerous Obsession by Michael Finkel is out next Faculty/Staff Book Club pick. The publisher's note states, "This is a riveting story of art, crime, love, and an insatiable hunger to possess beauty at any cost."
We are planning to meet to discuss The Art Thief on Thursday, October 26 from 3:15-4:15pm in the library.
