SCHOOL ACTIONS FOR UN/UV ABSENCES
If a student is absent from school, a parent/guardian must contact their child’s school the day of the absence by phone, email or note and state the reason for their child’s absence.
(UV ) = Unverified -no communication with school occurred
(UN) = Unexcused
The parent has five days to make this contact per Code of VIrginia § 22.1-258 and
RCPS Policy JED http://www.rockingham.k12.va.usConsequences for UN/UV Absences
5 Days:
Attendance Improvement Plan (AIP )Part I - Parent/guardian/student conference may take place in person, by phone or by other communication technology.
7 Days: Attendance Improvement Plan (AIP) Part II - This is a school-based multi-disciplinary meeting. This must be held even if the parent/guardian is absent. The team shall monitor the student’s attendance and meet again if necessary to address concerns and add interventions.
10 Days: The school based multi-disciplinary meeting must be held within 10 days of the 10th UN/UV absence. The team shall monitor the student’s attendance and meet again if necessary to address concerns and add interventions.
10 or More Days: Referral to Attendance Officer
The Attendance Officer will meet with the parent/guardian/student;
OR A community based Interdisciplinary Team Meeting will be scheduled at the School Board Office;
OR The Attendance Officer will file a petition with the Harrisonburg/Rockingham Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court alleging the child is in need of supervision (CHINS) per Code of Virginia 16.1-228
12 Days - A letter of notification will be sent to the parent.
15 Days - Attendance Improvement Plan (AIP) Part I is completed conference may take place in person, by phone or by other communication technology. The school may implement an Attendance Plan Part II at day 17, if necessary.
