Congratulations to the SHS JROTC program for assessing their students through the NOCTI JROTC Leadership and Employability Skills Assessment. Not only will this provide students with possible college credit recommendations in the future, but they scored ABOVE the national average (68%) at 77%!

JV and Varsity girls softball tryouts will take place Tuesday, February 20th through Thursday, February 22nd at the SHS Varsity softball field from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM located behind the middle school. All girls trying out must have a current VHSL physical on file with the athletic director in order to participate.

Students attending tryouts should have transportation to pick them up no later than 5:10 PM.

The SHS Chorus will hold its annual Night on Broadway fundraising concerts on March 15 & 16 at 7pm! Tickets are $10 at the door. The Smithfield Times and The Schoolhouse Museum are again teaming up for the fourth annual Black History Month Essay Contest.

The contest is for high school students in Isle of Wight and Surry.

Public, private and homeschooled students in grades 9-12 are invited to submit essays that address the contest theme, “Celebrate, Motivate, Inspire.” Contestants are asked to describe an African American in history, your life or your community who has made a positive impact and how that person personally inspired you.

A $150 cash prize will be awarded for the winning essay, which will be published in The Smithfield Times. Second- and third-place essays will earn prizes of $100 and $50, respectively.

Essays of up to 350 words should be submitted by email to editor@smithfieldtimes.com and include the author's name, school, grade, email address and parents' names. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9.

A committee of judges from The Schoolhouse Museum will select the winners.

The division is accepting feedback on the 2024-2025 School Calendar through January 31, 2024.

To provide comments on the proposed calendar, complete the Online Survey.

The calendar survey will remain open until January 31, 2024 at 11:59 pm. A final draft calendar will be shared with the School Board at their February 8, 2024, meeting. The board will vote to approve a calendar at their March 14, 2024, meeting.

The 2024 Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions will be administered

starting in January to all students in grades nine, ten, eleven, and twelve and all classroom
instructors and licensed staff in your building, regardless of the grades served by the
individual. To opt out, please read through the attached letter and contact Danielle Hewitt.

Parent Letter

The first phase of the James River Bridge cable replacement work was completed on Monday, January 15, 2024. VDOT announced they will NOT use the January back-up closure dates of January 19 and January 22. Therefore, these days will be REGULAR days for all students and staff.

VDOT plans to conduct a second closure in February. As a result, IWCS has announced that February 2, which is already a student holiday, will be a staff virtual workday. February 5 will also be a student holiday and a staff virtual workday.

If there are any changes to the February dates, IWCS will notify families and employees by 3:00pm on Thursday, February 1.

As a reminder, the School Board approved January 31 as a Regular Student Day. It will be the last day of the 2nd quarter and the 1st semester.
