Lottery is Open Now!
- Hello CMIT Parents/Guardians,
The 2023-2024 lottery for Charter Schools is still open but closes February 10, 2023! If your child has any siblings that are not currently enrolled into Chesapeake Math & IT North, but you wish to enroll them, now is the time to enter for a seat for the upcoming school year. Please be mindful that a sibling is a brother or sister by blood, marriage, or adoption living in the same household (friends, cousins or two separate families living under the same roof do not qualify as siblings.) If your potential student does not have a student ID number please reach out to your boundary school to obtain one.

Hello Parents/Guardians!
As we are now into cold/flu season and also still dealing with COVID-19, this note serves as a gentle reminder regarding a few things related to student health.
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL
1. Sick children need to be kept home from school; to include excessive coughing, sore throat, runny nose/congestion, vomiting, and/or high body temperatures (fever). Resting at home will help them get better more quickly and will prevent them from exposing other children or the staff to their illness.

Attendance
Please note, we have implemented a Google form for submission of absences/late arrivals and notes. This form is the only acceptable method of communication and must be utilized for reporting absences/late arrivals and uploading doctor/medical notes ONLY for your student(s). With the exception of COVID reporting in which an email in addition to the absence form must be sent to Nurse Ann (sally.warf@pgcps.org), Dr. Fryson (tfryson@cmitelementary.org) and Mrs. Virgil (evirgil@cmitelementary.org). Saturday Academy
Saturday Academy is in session this Saturday, February 4th, 2023. Drop off by 9:00 a.m. and pick up by 11:00 a.m. Saturday Academy will not be in session February 11, 2023 as that is the STEM Fair date.

Tigers are encouraged to be mindful of good craftsmanship and completeness when finishing their projects. We will also continue with our reflections at the end of each project.
The Black History Art Contest run through to next week, Friday. Tigers will work on their posters in the classroom. Students only need to bring in their poster boards.

STEM Fair February 11 , 2023
STEM Fair projects were due January 27th. Students who are advancing to the school wide STEM fair will receive an invitation by Monday, February 6th. Our school wide STEM fair will be February 11th. This event will be invitation only.
Parent University
PARENTS! PARENTS! PARENTS!
Come one, come all! Parent University will be on Wednesday February 15, 2023. This meeting will include our Elementary Middle school counselor, Mr. Johnson who will discuss executive functioning and it's meaning for our students. We will also have our grade levels teachers present information on the content areas Reading and Math.

Thank you to all of the grandparents, teachers, staff, and volunteers that came out last week and made the Grub with Grandparents event such a success. We had almost 250 grandparents in the building spending time with their grandkids!

Hello Kindergarten Families,
February is here…let’s celebrate and highlight black inventors, writers, and scholars. Our 100th Day of School will be Tuesday, February 7, 2023. We are looking forward to seeing our scholars in their 100th day of school t-shirt, or dressed up as a 100 year old. Keep an eye out for pictures posted in your scholar's class story.
Your scholars went home with Valentine’s Day gram fliers this week. If you are interested in purchasing grams, the deadline to turn it in will be on February 8, 2023.
Please check the weather daily, so your scholar is dressed appropriately for outdoor recess. Please make sure that you are reading any messages via dojo, class story, or emails pertaining to your scholar’s class.
Homework is posted by the end of the day on Fridays, for the upcoming week. Please make sure that your scholar is completing their homework assignments, they are graded on completion weekly. If your scholar is in enrichment, please provide your scholar with a homework journal daily, so they can work on the assignments in enrichment.
Our final Assessment for the winter will be the DRA Assessments, and they will be completed over the next couple of weeks. Please make sure that your scholar’s are well rested and eat a balanced breakfast so they can have a clear mind and be ready for the upcoming assessments.

If you signed your scholar up for clubs, their afternoon dismissal is for them to be in holding with the enrichment scholars. Please remember the days that your scholar is in a club, if they are usually a car or van rider, they will not be at their regular scheduled dismissal area. If for some reason, they are not to go to their club that day, please notify your scholar’s teacher ahead of time, so they can be at the correct dismissal location.
ELA: We will work on listening actively and ask questions to understand information and answer questions using multi word responses. Describe familiar people, places, things, and events, with support, provide additional detail. We will also use letter-sound relationships to decode, including VC, CVC, CCVC, and CVCC words. We will continue reviewing these sight words for the week: any, come, play.
Math: We are starting topic 10, we will be writing teen numbers 11-19. We will find parts of the numbers 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 when one part is 10. We will identify how counters and equations show 10 ones and some ones. We will use counters to show the numbers and draw them in a double ten-frame and then complete the equation to match the picture.
Science: We will continue discussing different types of severe weather, tornadoes, thunderstorms, hurricanes, and lightning. We will have a science quiz on what we have learned by the end of the week.
Social Studies: We are reviewing and describing the relative location of a person, place, or thing. Providing clues such as landmarks, to describe a location without giving the direct address. (absolute location)
Health: We are continuing to talk about the importance of taking care of our teeth and visiting the dentist. Dentists not only solve problems, they can prevent them. Potential problems they can spot include the onset of gum disease and dental decay. Exit card: How often should you go to the dentist?
Friendly reminder: Class dojo is one of our main forms of communication for any classroom activities, events, and messages. Please make sure that you are connected to your scholar’s Class dojo. Teacher emails and the communication folder are other ways to stay connected as well.

Please provide a nut free snack for your scholar daily.
Your scholar should have a full set of extra change of clothes (uniform) that can be kept in their cubbies.
Please label all of your scholar’s items, sweaters, jackets, water bottles, lunch bags.
If your scholar’s form of transportation changes for dismissal, please complete the necessary forms and upload into the document, as well as notify your scholar’s teacher.

Tuesday, February 7 is the 100th Day of School! To celebrate the number 100 first graders can come to school dressed as themselves at "100 years old" on Tuesday.
Please remember that if your dismissal plans change, notify your child's teacher via dojo as well as the front office before 1:00 p.m. on the day of the change.
Additionally, please ensure that your child is dressed warmly when they arrive to school in the mornings. We have outdoor recess at 10:20 a.m. if the temperature is at or above 32 degrees. It is important that students are dressed appropriately for the weather.

This week in reading, we will be finishing up Unit 3 Week 1 and begin working on Week 2. Throughout week 2, we will be continuing to focus on traditional tales. Our weekly story will be "The Legend of the Lady Slipper." While reading this text and other traditional tales, we will be making personal, textual, and societal connections to author's purpose. The spelling Patterns will be comparative endings.
In Math, we will be finishing up Topic 7. In this topic, we are solving more problems involving addition and subtraction. We will be taking our topic 7 assessment.
We will be finishing up presenting STEM Fair Projects in science this week.
In Social Studies, we will continue learning about different community leaders.
We are in need of tissues. With the cold and flu season in full affect, we are going through our supplies fairly quickly.
Please ensure scholars are coming to school dressed for the winter weather. We have recess at
10:50 a.m. and will be going outside if the temperature is about 32 degrees.
The 100th day of school is February 7th. Students may come to school with 100 items attached to their shirt!

Happy Black History Month! In Reading, we will begin reading the historical fiction Granddaddy's Turn: A Journey at the Ballot Box. Students will practice working with abbreviations. In Social Studies, students will continue reading about America's First People and Early Explorers.
This week in Math, scholars are taking our Topic 1-8 Cumulative Assessment. Since we've crossed over into the 2nd half of 3rd grade, we are using this data to see how well students have been grasping all of the main concepts covered so far. Then we will move into our next topic on adding and subtracting up to 1,000.
In Science, we are learning about the different factors that affect the climate of various regions. Scholars will classify the differences between weather and climate.

Fantastic Fourth Graders!
Our 100th day of school will be on February 7, 2023. Students are invited to wear or create a shirt to celebrate the 100th day of school. Please see the attached picture for reference.
We strongly encourage parents to check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your scholar's progress in all academic areas. Students can redo eligible assignments within a week of being posted. Weekly check-ins with your scholar about his/her grades is a great way to set goals and reflect on progress.
We are in need of hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, and facial tissues. The cold and flu season is upon us and we would like to continue to keep our classrooms germ free.

100th Day of School Celebration:
CMIT Elementary will celebrate the 100 Day of School and the 5th grade team wants you all to participate! This will be a fun and creative day! Scholars can wear anything that represents "100". Anything that has the number "100" can be worn, scholars can put 100 items on their clothing, scholars can dress as an elderly 100 year old, or anything else that represents 100 is encouraged. Be creative! Thank you for participating!

"The Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition":
The CMIT 5th Grade Team would like to announce that we have registered to be a part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee which is taking place on May of 2023 in Washington, D.C. We are excited and elated about this opportunity! Our scholars will do well! Our 5th Graders will be the only participants in the spelling bee and we encourage each student to study the spelling words that have been created as the "Spelling 2023 List" from Scripps National Spelling Bee. If you have questions, please go to spellingbee.com or contact Ms. Tellis via email (btellis@cmitelementary.com) and I will gladly answer any questions regarding the spelling bee. There is an app called "WordClub" that can be downloaded via cell phone that will help students study each word and play games related to the spelling words in order to strengthen their vocabulary skills. Please feel free to download the App today!
There are 3 levels to the spelling bee:

Level 2: 5th Grade Team Bee
Level 3: Final round/School Wide Assembly Spelling Bee
The winner competes in Washington, D.C. in May for the National Bee!

Scholars are exploring and diving into Chapter 7 with Life in the Young Republic. They are learning about the first Presidents, The Jefferson and Louisiana Purchase, The War of 1812, The American Indians and the Trail of Tears, and The New Arrivals and the fight for freedom! What an adventure!

Hey Tiger families! Students in grades 3-5 are deep in their digital audio workspace unit and are using this week to REMIX popular songs! We are making a choice between a Beyonce song, a Steve Lacy Song, and a Glass Animals song and adding beats and instruments according to the BPM and KEY of the song! Rock on Tigers!
Grades 1-2 finished up their instrument families unit, and are creating their own imaginary instruments. Grade 1 is the lucky group that will get to execute their designs using recycled materials in two weeks!
