Tips from the Team
Sleep for Good Health
“Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Benjamin Franklin
We have probably all heard this quote before, but the word “early” is subject to interpretation. Certainly my idea of early is quite different from my teenage daughter’s. Interestingly, in a study of more than 88,000 people, Nikbakhtian et al. in 2021 found that the rate of cardiovascular disease was lowest in people that regularly go to bed between 10 pm and 11 pm. The highest rate was found in those that fall asleep after midnight. The researchers suggested that 10 pm – 11 pm timeframe may align with our natural circadian rhythm, or internal clock. However, they did point out that this may not apply to everyone.
Getting an adequate amount of sleep, seven hours or more, is a crucial component to health. The CDC reports that we are at a higher risk for heart disease, as well as many other negative health consequences, if we routinely get less than seven hours of sleep per night. Sleep truly matters in all facets of our wellbeing, both physical and mental. Here are a few helpful tips to ensure that you are getting plenty of quality sleep.
- Consistency is key. Keep to a set bedtime, even on the weekends.
- Try to get natural light exposure, especially earlier in the day to keep your internal clock on track. Similarly, avoid artificial blue light (computers and cell phones before bed).
- Make sure your room is quiet, dark, and a cooler temperature. Your body slightly drops in temperature when you sleep. If you are in a cooler environment, you may naturally fall asleep faster. Also, research suggests that you may have better quality of sleep as well.
