CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
CCS Social Studies Curriculum Quarterly, Quarter 4
The CCS Social Studies Curriculum Quarterly provides a preview of upcoming content. Articles highlight the units, standards, TCI lessons and other resources for each core social studies class, and outline some effective instructional strategies for all courses.
The Quarter 4 edition highlights two frequently-used strategies in fourth quarter lessons, Experiential Exercise and Visual Discovery. Strategy correlations to each TCI lesson are included in the summary of each course content.
*
Social Studies Literacy & Language Support
A quarterly bulletin highlights resources available to support all teachers with literacy and English language development in the social studies classroom.
The bulletin includes information and resources across five topics:
- CCS Adopted Programs Support;
- ESL Department Support;
- Supplemental Resources; and
- Professional Articles for Teachers.
*
TCI Experiential Exercises and Writing for Understanding
Experiential Exercise is designed to tap into students’ intrapersonal and body-kinesthetic intelligence. They help students learn abstract ideas and make remote events accessible and meaningful.
Writing for Understanding activities improve both students’ understanding of key social studies concepts and their writing ability by engaging students in interactive experiences.
View the videos below and learn more about each TCI strategy from the Interactive Methods Guidebook.

Financial Literacy Resources
To meet requirements for instruction in financial literacy in the state of Ohio, CCS incorporates economics and financial literacy into social studies courses in grades 6-8, HS American History and HS American Government. CCS curriculum maps draw special attention to this topic in the fourth quarter.
Topics to be addressed in financial literacy include:
- Financial Responsibility and Decision Making;
- Income and Careers;
- Planning and Money Management;
- Consumerism;
- Investing;
- Credit/Debt; and
- Risk Management and Insurance.
While there is no minimum amount of instructional time required, the time allotted should be sufficient enough to address each topic meaningfully.
The following financial literacy resources are available free for CCS classrooms.
Middle School:
- Practical Money Skills - Students can prepare for the real world with these activities. Lessons include making financial decisions and credit card basics.
- EVERFI Future Smart - The interactive lessons will engage learners in an immersive adventure that translates financial concepts into easy to apply experiences that help students develop strategies for managing future finances. EVERFI is available through CCS Clever.
High School:
- Next Gen Finance - The Unit library includes lessons, interactives, assessments and other resources for engaging students with quality personal finance curriculum.
- EVERFI Financial Literacy - The interactive lessons in this financial literacy course translate complex financial concepts and help students develop actionable strategies for managing their finances. EVERFI is available through CCS Clever.

Financial Literacy Requirement for Class of 2026 and Beyond
Ohio law states the study and instruction of financial literacy shall align with Ohio’s Financial Literacy Standards and Model Curriculum adopted by the State Board of Education in 2018 and 2019.
To comply with this requirement, CCS Social Studies is in the process of revising our Economics curriculum. This revised curriculum will align with Ohio's Financial Literacy Standards. A draft of the new curriculum will be made available this May.
Students in the class of 2026 and beyond may use this Economics course to meet the .5 financial literacy requirement. This course may not be used as one of the three Social Studies credits required by the state of Ohio. District requirements remain 1.0 credits in Modern World History (9), American History (10) and American Government (11). Economics may be used to meet .5 of the 1.0 Academic Elective requirement for the District.
Schools using the Economics course to meet financial literacy should plan to have students take this course at the grade level when they would typically take the other .5 of their Academic Elective requirement.
